Antec "optional" front fan - necessary for this system?

Hi,

I am about to order the following system:

(sorry about the caps, I copied most of this from an order form)

CPU: ATHLON 64 3500+ S939 2.2 GHz L2 512KB
Mobo: MSI K8N NEO2 PLATINUM SOCKET 939
CPU Cooler: Zalman 7000A-ALCU
RAM: KINGSTON DDR 512MB 400MHz PC3200 x2
HD: SAMSUNG SP1213C 120GB 7200RPM SATA
Graphics: SAPPHIRE RADEON 9600SE 128M DDR w DVI TV OUT
Case: Antec SONATA
(or)
Case: Antec SLK3700BQE
PSU: Seasonic Super Tornado 400W (instead of Antec PSU)
Optional fan: ANTEC 120MM SMART FAN W/ TEMP CONTROL

My question is about the optional fan, the Antec 120mm Smart Fan. I note that Antec describes the front fan as "optional" for both the Sonata and the SLK 3700 BQE. I am not into overclocking or gaming and I am using the system mainly as a digital audio workstation. Quiet operation is my main goal. Do I need a front fan with my proposed system?

you dont really need it, but if you want it to be just that much cooler, then go for it! i was actually looking at something like that the other day, and i thought "well, i dont really need it" but i decided i wanted it anyway, just for that tiny bit more of efficiency.
 
.....only comment I'd add is that smart fan or not, the front panel fan is usually the noisiest one in the bunch. The front panel fan in my "full size" Antec has a rheo on it, and I slowed it way down.

With a good 120mm on the back, and with decent air intakes, the "need" for a front panel fan is questionable.....

Check my sig, thats what im running in a similar antec case and my temps were around 40 idle w/ stock heatsink, 38 w/ zalman 7700 w/ shitty thermal paster (ordered as5) I want to get alot better overclock so i ordered 2 14DBA Silenx 60CFM Fans to replace the single 38CFM fan. I am also putting on the as5 on the processor and nvsilencer that i ordered. I may end up cutting out the HD cage for my water cooling system when it goes in
 
To answer you question quickly and succinctly: the Antec Sonata should be cool enough with just the rear fan.
 
Front fans are good to push air onto your hard drives. Cooler components = longer life.
 
Go for the front fan. Get the 3-speed adjustable Antec fan so you can control the noise. 2x120mm fans is about ideal for cooling.
 
You do not NEED it, but it would add to the cooling potential of your case...
 
you probably don't need that extra fan on the front unless the inside of the case is cramped which possibly might hamper air flow into the case. in that case, the optional fan would help. of course, if you plan on over-clocking than you can never have enough cooling.
