i am building my first computer now, and am looking for a cheap(er) case with a good power supply and cooling.
It would be nice if it's quiet too.

Here's the Antec cases I'm looking at:

or

or for a little more $$

Any thoughts /comments ? Is the Sonata worth the extra money? Or should i stick with the basic one?
Thanks for your time

Most of the smart dudes here say the Life Series case is the best for beginners. I'm in the same boat as you, but IceWind suggested in another thread THIS Antec case. But judging from the cases you've picked out, you don't seem to want a side window and fancy stuff.

The smart guys say the Life Series case is good 'cause it has a ton of room to work with and it's real basic.

Judging from you choices, I'd have to say your not interested in a full tower from them.

That being said, it really depends on which case you prefer more. Do you want to live with the door or do you think it would get annoying after awhile? Does the fact that the Sonata has the name ANTEC stamped into the side panel make much difference to you?

If you want the quitest option, that would be the sonanta with the rubberized HDD mounts, quiet 1 fan PSU and 120mm fan mounts.

With the 635, your only choices are 80mm fans, which don't push as much air as a 120mm and do make more noise in comparison. You reduce this by using a bay or rheobus to control the fans or using lower CFM fans.

Boils down down to what you like STYLE wise PERSONALLY. But the quietest case would be the Sonata.

Somebody posted a nice paint job on an Antec case a while back. With a little bit of modification, I'd say you would it look pretty good.

Yeah, I definitely want a mid-tower and while a window wouldn't be bad, I just can't find a case that I like with a window and other stuff. Thanks for the comments though.

EDIT: How hard would it be to add a side window later? I realize cutting steel is not exactly fun...

Get either a SLK3700AMB or BQE and add your own window.

The BQE is almost a sonata interior but with removable sides on both sides and no antec stamping. The AMB is a more traditional drive cage, but it holds 5 as opposed to 4 HDDs, and is removable, you can also fit a 120mm in between the case front and the bay instead of behind the bay.

Cutting isn't the steel isn't to bad. Doing it with a dremel is painful, so i use a jigsaw

No offense, but you show off that case wwaaayyy too much.

Save your self some time and go with a lian li case. Any Antec owner who went to Lian li after their antec case will tell ya lian li works better ...

lian li > antec

antecs are heavyer and trap heat because of their structure. Also modding can be a pain since they are not as easy to cut.

Just so that no one gets the wrong idea just trying to open your eyes to something that might suit you better

how the cooling on the lian-li cases i would love to get me one, but they dont use 120mm fans?

you really dont need a 120mm fan

I run all stock fans. And I get like 35-40C in the summer and like 25-35 during the non warm months here in Georgia

I mean I have like 3 hard drives running at the same time and its allways stays cool. The fans are good since they dont make lots of noise

my brother has a lian li case and boy is it tight. im pretty sure that they run very cool. i havnt seen the temps on his.
