Antec Big Boy 200mm

I have rugrats now and I have had to move my PS3 into a cabinet. I have ordered a AC fan controller and I am looking to add some cooling to ventilate my PS3.

Im limited to local retailers as the wife wants this done Monday.

Im looking at 4x Scythe GentleTyphoon 120mm but those roll in at $18.77 each.
or 2x Antec Big Boy 200mm at $19 each

It might be because my brain isnt working today, but Im having through finding actual reviews of the Big boy. Could anyone lend a hand and point me in the direction of an actual review?

ive actually never seen the antec big boy fan.. and local retail wise you probably wont find it anywhere.. honestly all you need are a couple low RPM fans.. cut 2 holes in the back of the cabinet or make your own back panel to hold the fans and you should be good..

Actually I was in Friday looking at parts and they had a dusty box full of them. I know the bigger the fan, the more air it moves quiter, but I am hesitant due to the lack of information out there....If they were good, it should be easy to hear more about them.

The folks over at SPCR aren't exactly falling head over heels to get their hands on the Big Boy, so ...

Regardless, the Gentle Typhoon fans are excellent. I'd go with those or a couple Scythe Slipstreams for a cabinet.

I believe the "big boy" is an OEM fan that is used in some cases and is more of a replacement part, like some of the large cooler master fans, so you might look up some reviews on cases that use the fan and see how it performs, however, for a cab, I would think just one of the 200mm fans would be enough to cool a PS3. Other than that, I would also go with a few Slipstream fans, GT's are a bit pricey for a cab setup.

I have an Antec 1200, and I can say for sure that it's a nice fan. Running it at low or med, this thing is quiet and moves quite a bit of air. Should work nicely for a cabinet. My next side project is to create a new side panel for this case that doesn't have a window and it fitted for an additional "Big Boy" for some ultimate air-cooling.

well if thats the case.. then for sure go with the slipstreams or the gentle typhoons..

I believe so, all the specs look the same on them, and I doubt they are going to make yet another fan when they can just sell the one that comes in the case. I have never used one, so I can't speak to it, but all the large (200mm+) fans on the market now seem...well....Rather cheaply made.

cheaply made is an under statement.. i dropped a screw into mine.. didnt go all the way through.. but it was just long enough to stick through the vent and hit the edges of the fan blades and it snapped off 4 of the blades.. im mean i could understand the blades being damaged.. but it snapped them off completely..

hmm you may be right.. thought it was larger then that sure looks bigger then the 120mm fans.. but now that noctua has a 140mm case fan ill probably replace it.. right now the top fan only has 2 blades on it.. had to snap the other ones off after i dropped a screw into the fan which shouldnt of even damaged the dang thing let alone break off 3 of the fan blades..

I don't know about the 140mm fans, but I can say that the 200mm fan isn't that fragile. I've taken mine out and used it to make the template for my new side panel, and even after dropping it and stepping on it, it's still as good as new. Even the Antec 120mm fans are strong, as one drunk night I used the ones that I replaced as a Frisbee and used my passed out buddy for target practice.

The 200mm tricool is the best fan in my case (antec 900), while I leave the rest on low, I can leave it on medium without any noticeable change in sound. If you threw one of them on the back it would be plenty to pull the hot air out.

srsly? you know these things spin at HUNDREDS of rpms right? thats fast for some thin plastic. like 1mm thin. and about 80mm long. thats a hell of a lot of torque when you throw something in there. i had one of my yates grab the side of my mobo tray once and it snapped a blade off and shut down my whole computer from the voltage spike. computer restarted fine, fan blade super glued back on fine and its all good now. it doesnt take much to snap off one of those blades when theyre spinning a thousand times a minute. and if they do get damaged, they will break off before they get marred because the weakest point is where the blade is attached to the hub.
