I’m building a system for my uncle. I really want to go with the Antec Sonata case, but on newegg it comes with a 380watt powersupply. I was planning on buying a Fortron 530watt just to be safe, but I’d hate to spend more money if it already comes with one.

The system is going to be pretty powerful, but not excessively.

At this point, most likely:
A64 2800+
ATi 9800 (maybe pro)
1 or 2 hard drives
DVD Burner

So will the 380 cut it or should I try and find somewhere that sells it without the powersupply and get the Fortron 530 just to be safe?

you'll be fine with the 380w PSU.

if you aren't happy with it, you can always sell it and use the money towards the 530w Fortron.

Powerful and Power Consumption are two different things. I bet a fortron 300 could handle those components without a hiccup. Stick with the included PSU.
