im building a new computer, msi diamond plus, amd x2 3800+ and was gonna get the 7900gt, but maybe this is overkill, since i dont play too many games. I'd like the option to play games with nice resolution, should i get the 7900gt or the 7600gt for like 100 bucks less?

What games would you like to run at what resolutions? And do you want max quality on all the games? The 7600GT is no slouch, but it is still nowhere near a 7900GT in raw power.

yip what ep1tath says is true. i have a 7600gt and i desire more power. i've been looking at the x1800gt's and 7900gt's because they are only a $100 more. my yearning for power only exists because i want to play video games with good fps at high res (1920x1080). I'm going to buy a new monitor that supports that res. it runs most games i play at with pretty much max image quality settings at very good frame rates 1024x768 because crt monitors suxors. CSS goes about 100 average. BF2 demo runs smooth once everything is loaded up (i need more ram). Lost Coast never really dips below 60, at least not noticeably. Fear demo is also very smooth. so unless you want really high res with high fps i think you'd do fine with a 7600gt. heck, you want mine? ;p bwahaha.

you will be getting LESS fps at 1920 res with a 7900gt than you do at 1024 with a 7600gt. if you plan on playing at 1920 you will need a minimum of a 7900gtx to play modern games.
