Right now, my wife and i want to upgrade the computer. I game on it and she copies "home DVD's" for "Family". Money is deffinatly an issue. im trying to keep the price of the CPU around 150$. Is the encoding preformance differnace that great from a 4.0 C2D to a 3-3.2 C2Q? Now the i7 thing..for the fact that there is not many games our that are M-T'ed, is the new archutechure really that much better for both gaming (even though i prolly can't get as many clocks out of it. is there a new and better preformance per clock for the i7?) and is it worth waiting. this was supposed to be a X-mas present but b/c of money it got delayed, so any dollar saved is awesome, but i need this new computer to last me for at least 2 years, worth of decent gaming.

As for right now im using an old peice of poo called a 3200+A64 with 1 gig of ram and a x800xl...so really anything newer would be kickass.

Are you open to overclocking? If so, The E5200 Would be a good option, Cost wise, Performance wise for the cost. You are gonna be copying dvd's which is not that much of a task, and im sure saving 80 bucks is worth the 20-30 secs of waiting for it to finish encoding ;).

If your wondering, Yes the e5200 will clock nicely up there with a e8400, e7300, I have the oddball of the e5200 fam and yet i can still clock it @ 4.3ghz @ 1.5V with load temps under 60C, That being a very high overclock and will probably not be needed for what your after. diff is the cache, which is probably like i said 20-30 secs at best knocked off encoding time, Which may be lower but im pulling those numbers out of my ass.

Other than that, If you can manage, Get the Q6600, If your made to go lower or wish to save, Like i said, the E5200 would be a good choice, Clocks up there with e8400/e7300, and in my case, even beats or keeps ups with em at the same clock for 80 bucks less.
 
My E5200 is doing 4.0Ghz at 1.45V - on a $55 motherboard. If you're looking for something cheap until you can scratch your i7 itch then it's something worth considering. I also moved up from an A64 3200+ and it's been a great experience all around. I call my new build "The Cheap Bastard" (an inside joke) but nothing about it feels cheap.
 
A E5200 at +4.0ghz? Damn that is a serious OC. yea i am mor ethen open to OC'ing but with 1/3 the cache of the E8xxx and a fsb at 800. i take it, that it is a wonderful OC'er because it has such a high multiplier? any little bit more out of the FSB it make a huge differance?. and it really isn't a true C2D?...i dunno i guess i really dont like the 5200. i think the lowest i would go is the 7300, but can the 5200 really preform close to a 8400 when both @ 4.0ghz?
 
Yup, Like i said, my e5200 is the oddball of the fam and does 4.4Ghz @ 1.5V, Which e8600 do easly and lucky e8400 can do. It is a overclockers dream i have mine right now @ 3.8ghz under 1.39V and fsb is @ 1220, Thats a 400 fsb increase from stock :cool:. It really is a c2d in disguise, Intel just named it a pentium so it can price it so low, Some e5200 has that temp bug which has been removed in the e7000 and e8000 series, which pretty much gives better accurate temps, Which for one i know my chip has, since it never drops under 32C in real temp, and 20C in bios.

As for clock per clock performance, Yes, A 8400 @ 4.0ghz with a e5200 @ 4.0ghz, the diffrence would be very small, I recall seeing some reviews out there comparing the e5200 and e7300, The e5200 being able to clock a bit higher than the e7300, I can not find it due to me clearing my browing history. :(
 
the extra 4mb of cache wont be much of a differance? i dunno im just having a hard time believing that a e5200 really is that good, even if it can clock just as high as a E8xxx. the architecture is close enough that you really wont see any real world differance or at least not enough to care about for the fact that you spent half the amount of money then any E8xxx? Becuase if it is all true it sounds too good. and even if so, that allows me to get a little bit better mobo, any suggestions on a good. ehhh 90-125$ mobo that would best match my E5200 allowing me to hit 3.8+?
 
Nvm on the Arch, both are wolfdales...=P so in that case i can understand why they can clock so high, they have a badass stock multiplier to fsb ratio. being at 12.5, any little bit in fsb OC'ing that you do, its good have a huge effect on it....the more and more i think about the more im leaning to the 5200.
 
You can get the Gigabyte UD3R, If you would like to open the choice of going crossfire later down the road or need the extra pcie slot, Get the UD3P, The UD3R is 99 after rebate and is the one i own, and it just rocks.

As for the cache diff, It really only shines on benchmarks, same with fsb, At best the diff would be about 1-2 more frames in games like crysis. Which can be easyly obtained by other ways, that being overclocking the video card or just overclock a bit more if you get a good chip.

Theres more of em out there, but i do not recall what site provided em. It really is a very good chip, most people overlook it due to its not branded c2d tag, but like i said, im sure intel just branded it pentium to make sense of the price tag.
 
Wow, a thread from last year. If this was asked now, I bet that the answer would be an AMD platform...
