I'm looking for a monitor as a present, mainly to be used for "everyday computing" and strategy games.

Here is a list of the "requirements":

Resolution: 1920x1200/1080
Good IQ :p
Price $500 (£250-£300) maximum

This (Dell S2409W) and BENQ V2400W is what I came up with so far, but I would like a few user opinions on how the monitors are, if any of you would happen to have or used either one. The "off-side" stand on the BENQ is a bit off putting for me... I thinks... possibly for the person which it's intended for as well.

As there is bound to be a few monitors that I'm not fully aware of, please do tell.

P.S. - The hardware to be used with the new monitor would be: P4 2.4Ghz, 6600GT (AGP) and 1GB of... not sure what speed RAM. There are also thoughts of going for a 22"/24" with 1680x1080 resolution, but I hope that the 6600GT would cope with the likes of Space Empires 5 the Total War (not the "second generation" of them) games on the 1200/1080p resolutions.

Whatever advice you can give it would be welcome. Thanks! :p

EDIT: Oh yes, I also found this LG W2452T. Forgot to include in the OP.

If you're interested in the V2400W, look at the cheaper yet almost identical G2400WD. Pretty much the same panel, but with a symmetrical base. Not super thin like the V2400W though.

Thanks, did not know about that model. I would kind of like to have a look at some of the monitors In a shop, but here in the UK I might not be so lucky to have that opportunity.
 
Look at these 24" displays that are pretty decent at $500 and under.

Asus Monitor
Asus MK241H 24"

BenQ Monitors
The G2400WD 24" that GJS just mentioned is an all around good monitor to. Or, the
The V2400W is also nice.
FP241VW is also good and it's not a TN panel

HP Monitor
HP 2408H 24" lcd has a glossy screen. Pic quality is pretty good. Vibrant colors due to brightview display.

Samsung Monitor
Samsung 2493HM - Has DVI-D, HDMI and VGA iputs. Plus, monitor can rotate 180 degrees into portrait mode and has height adjustment


Avoid the LG W2452T it has banding issues. See here.

At a glance there might be a problems actually getting the SyncMaster 245BW, but I will look around for some as it does seem good, spec wise any way. :p
