Another Violent video game Study

The effect they have on me is that I stay at home and don't bother anyone while I game away the day. These studies are not merely intended to educate. They are the tools of infringement on our first amendment rights, and further de-legitimize games and gamers in general. They said the same thing about Dungeons and Dragons, heavy metal music then rap, where's the epidemic? In fact, once upon a time if you listened to Elvis you were going to turn into a hellbound sex fiend. People who want to make our decisions for us have to be taken very seriously. There are few things more dangerous to liberty and freedom than those who profess to save us from ourselves. Macarthyism happened in this country and could happen again if it is permitted.

Well said...

theres a fine line between educating and forcing beliefs

This is just my two cents on the issue. And yes, I am a gamer and have been for many years. And no, I dont think that the studies should be acted upon by the means of banning games or something like that. I do think that they are interesting, as I think all resserach is interesting. So dont give me shit about how Im not a gamer or how I was one of the test subjects or something stupid like that. Unless violent video games are banned, I dont see why anyone really cares. Even with agr restrictions on buying, have an older brother or sister, or friend, or friends brother or sister, or even :gasp: your parents buy the game for you. Maybe I just didnt have a very wealthy upbringing, but my parents bought all of my games for me when I was a little kid anyhow... :shrugs:

So, I only read the first page and then I got pretty bored of the fact that a majority of people who posted on page one blamed everything on one single thing, be that violent games, rap music, or whatever else. The fact of the matter is, people and who they are and how they think and feel is determined by so many different things, in my opinion. Yes, I am someone who would argue that both nature and nurture determine the outcome of a person and who they are.

If you grew up in a neighborhood where you had drive by's on a nightly basis, of course you are more likely to end up in the category of people who are more aggressive. Yeah, the same could happen for a white guy, a black guy, an asian, anyone. Maybe you had two really shitty parents who hit you. Some people in that situation would do the same to their kids. Some would never do that because that is what they went through. Maybe you were raped as a child. Maybe you grew up with everything material you could ever want. Maybe you were only able to eat once a week beacuse you were so poor. Maybe you were hit my a car, kidnapped, shot, aced your SATs, went to Stanford, were in a terrible car accident, etc etc etc.

Its not just video games. Its video games and music and who your parents were and who your friends were and teachers and what community you lived in and who your coworkers were and how much you got paid and what you had for dinner and who your brothers and sisters were and where you lived in the world and everything else.

The study does not say that 100% of gamers are going to grow up to be total stoners who have unprotected sex every moment of their life while banging back shots of vodka and slitting their neighbors throats every house they move into or something.

It merely says that some people who play games are more inclined to show negative side effects. Thats a fact. I dont care how you look at it, its fact. At least ONE person in the world who plays video games is going to show negative side effects that was partially an outcome of the videogame.

And if you dont believe that, then I am here to prove you wrong because that would be me. No, I dont drink or smoke. I havent ever killed anybody, no. Have I had unprotected sex? Yes. Would I say that that is influenced by videogames? No, I cant say that I think that playing Counter-strike or GTA or Soldier of Fortune of COD2 or any other game caused me to have unprotected sex. I think that was the knowledge that she wasnt carrying any STD's, she was on birth control, I still pulled out most of the time, and condoms are expensive when youre 15 or 16. Do I get more aggressive while playing games? Sometimes, yeah. I am more inclined to get angry while playing a violent game than I am when playing one that is not violent in nature, and yeah I would say that that has to do with the game. Thats just the nature of it because it does raise blood pressure much like being in a very competitive basketball game or something would because of the competition and adrenaline and excitement. So even if nobody else has ANY negative effects that they would somehow relate to playing violent video games, I do. Therefore, SOME of the people who play violent video games show "negative" symptoms that can be liked in part to video games.

It never claims that the only reason the person drinks excessively is because of violent video games or that everyone who plays them drinks excessively, just that there is a positive corelation between playing violent video games and excessive drinking. There is also a positive coorelation between gambling and excessive drinking, do you have a problem with those studies because not everyone who gambles has a drinking problem? Its merely a statement that studies show a positive coorelation.

Once again, though, just my two cents.

I dunno man, I've felt pretty violent after some games of Animal Crossing. Stupid neighbors... I swear!

Police: 8-Year-Old Steals Teacher's Keys, Takes Joyride

MODESTO, Calif. -- He's being called the youngest car thief in Modesto's history.

Police say an 8-year-old boy took the keys to his teacher's minivan out of her purse, walked out of class and drove home safely after school Monday.

When the third-grader pulled up to the home of his parents in the Dodge Caravan, a neighbor saw him get out and called police.

The boy -- whose identity was not released -- told officers he just wanted to drive around for a while.

In order to operate the Dodge Caravan, he raised the driver's seat, lowered the steering wheel, adjusted the rearview mirror and turned off the radio.

No charges have been filed, but the 8-year-old has been suspended from school. Officers lectured the boy after interviewing him.

the news anchor also said the boys favorite game was grand theft auto

^^ of course. If it is true why the hell did his parents let him play GTA? It is not the games fault that it was played by someone that it wasnt intended for.

Being alive increases your blood pressure. Better ban that too. I also hear it's a major source of violence (like around 100% of all violence).

If parents can't teach their kids whats right and whats wrong, then there is a problem. I hate how people say video games are a negative influencer on kids. How rock/rap/pop music influences kids to dress like weirdos, paint their nails black, dye their hair pink, and have sex like monkeys.
This crap all came about because of the Colorado High School killings, which was traced to their playing violent games such as "Doom". It was because their parents prolly didnt care enough about their kids to have an active role in their lives. My parents since I first started to watch TV enforced on me that it isn't real. Its all fake. Thus it was transfered to video games.

Yet "adults" who listen to music are perfectly fine, listening to country...Songs that talk about drinking, having sex, sleeping with hookers in hotel rooms while doing cocaine and getting divorced. Now that's not influential when we have a high divorce rate here?

You know what is a GREAT stress reliever? Killing n00bs in CSS and BF2.

Yup. They are right. When I play D00M 3 I have to take my clothes off, drink alchohol, smoke some weed and fuck my cat without a condom.
.

YOU TOO ? ;)

It boils down to 2 things, what you do with urges you get (from whatever source) and personal accountability. I can honestly say, if I'm playing a game and losing, it pisses me off and makes me "violent". Of course, at worst, I've logged off, shut the computer down and went to cool down. I've had my wife or son nagging at me when that happened and have snapped at them and said things I wouldn't have otherwise. I've also had times when I've bit my tongue and not said anything. I would no more go out and kill someone from these feelings then I would if it was anything else pissing me off. It's our duty, in our societies, to channel violent urges into sports, video games or other methods that let us blow off steam without hurting anyone. Yeah, people who have mental problems or something like that might not be able to control the urges they get, from games or other things, but most normal people can control themselves just fine.

That could lead to another study. Gather a bunch of noobs and a bunch of 1337 people and have them play eachother in games. Compare whatever stat you want then.

Also, where was this study's control group? They have to have something other than a violent game and a non-violent game....Yay for skewed statistics!

Anyways, no shit violent video games raise blood pressure, they are supposed to be intense. The people in this research group would probably be suprised to see that eating 5 Big Macs everyday without exercise would cause someone to gain weight.

I'm a very educated individual, have never done less than an honors course. What you said towert that it is only the uneducated and "dumb" that are affected is totally biased and offensive. I guess some people are just ignorant and hard headed.
hahahahaha-- what a tool.

Edit: Back in gradeschool, i know some peeps that would get aggressive when they didn't understand some math lesson(s), so killers, rapists, rioters study math....

The control group here must have been non-existent. Crap, even playing Frogger (non-violent in any way) will get some elevated stress levels because of that one fricking truck that runs you over.
