another upgrade path ?

I am currently running the setup in my sig. I am pretty happy with it right now. I use it 90% of the time for gaming. Obviously I am starting to think about when I should leave s939. A couple of my main concerns 1.) Do I get out now while I can still get some good $ for my 170 and my DDR? 2). If I do upgrade, do I go with DDR3 since Nehalem will probably utilize it?( I hate changing RAM).

I am thinking about going LGA775 with an e8400 and 2x2gb of DDR2 or 2x1gb DDR3(of course I would like to have 4gb. )

OR

Waiting until later this year for Nehalem.

note: when is AMD's next great architecture/proc/chipset due out?

1) YES, get OUT NOW - I just upped from my opty 165 to intel and love it
2) DDR2 is too cheap to pass up, ddr3 doesn't provide enough of a boost to justify. 3x as much to get 10% actual boost.

What game/app is not running fast enough for you? What resolution do you play at? In what area of performance do you hope to see gains? Do you need 150 fps or is 70 fine?

Jump when your system doesn't perform for you, not because "everyone else" is getting a Q6600/E8400

I try to upgrade when I can't play my games at avg rates at a minimum of 50 FPS. So long as I'm above that number I don't throw money away. That usually means I peak in the 70s and lows in 30s.

Everyone's definition of playable is different. Try not to get sucked into the hype, upgrade when required based on your needs and not a moment sooner. 250 and 70 FPS feels almost the same to me, YMMV.

Good questions. I game on a 22' lcd, so I prefer to play at 1680x1050. Playing Crysis right now, so avg fps is pretty much a moot point. I guess I prefer to be 30fps or higher, which is mostly all on my gpu since I game at high resolutions.

I agree with not getting caught up in the upgrade hype. I think I have gotten pretty good at that. I guess I am just more concerned with getting out too late and not being able to sell my DDR or 170 (happened to me with my 3000+).

IMO it's already too late in that regard. DDR2 is *dirt* cheap, so don't expect much from even older memory, and I'd think $100 MAX on the cpu assuming you found the right buyer; probably more like $60

checking completed auctions on ebay, a used opty 170 is going for 115-140.
