Another temp question ...

The system is a P4C 2.4ghz running at 3.01ghz ... no voltage increase just fsb overclock and 5:4 ram ratio. The heatsink/fan is the volcano 12 or whatever... I was in a bind and the only heatsink/fan at compusa was this one. It has an adustable fan dial and yada... The rpm is unreally fast but also soooo loud that I usually have it manually turned down. Also using A Silver 5.

I was wondering if running idle (according to the bios) at 40 degrees Celsius is bad...

question two... when running sandra burn in I get the motherboard warning beeps that my temp is at or over 60 degrees C (I have a gigabyte motherboard and that is the setting I have on it )... does that seem odd that the temperature goes up that much?

My 3.0C runs at about 40C idle too, at stock voltages. I have an Asus P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard and a Zalman CNPS7000-Cu cooler. With the fan at the lowest setting (1500 RPM) I get a max load temp of 61C. I am also using AS-5.

The only temps to be worried about IMO are the ones that cause CPU throttling. Anything under 70C should be fine. I also hear it can take a lot (months) of hot/cold cycles to break in the AS5 to maximum efficiency, so maybe that is at work here too.

eehhh, I don't know about those temps. they look kind of high.(Swank)

That's what I thought too when I first saw them. I used to have this chip on a prommy. I think my chip just runs hot. I had similar temps with the stock Intel cooler. My case is between 30~33C, so ventilation is good. When I turn up the CPU fan speed to 3000 RPM I get better temps with a 48C max, but I like my PC as quiet as possible.

I haven't had any stability problems even with 10 hour unreal tournament gaming binges. I would love to see lower temps, but as long as it doesn't cause problems I'm not going to worry about it. :) Who needs a CPU to last ten years anyway? I have yet to break a year with most of my CPU's before I upgrade. :p

I use Speedfan to control my Zalman's rpm. I have it at 60% when surfing and 100% while gaming.

Thanks for the heads up.... I figured I wasn't going to fry my chip but just thought it was a bit high... Maybe one day I'll switch heatsink fans to a zalman and see what happens.... It could be my motherboard reading high too.... thanks again though..

The intel chip would melt at 100c if it did not have built in thermal protection. Idealy you would be at around 31c at idle so your not doing fabulous but your doing ok

well i was wondering about my own rig because im using the fan control on my p4p800 deluxe and i have the fan super quiet at around 3000 rpm. idle temps are around 27-30 but when i load programs or play games it starts edging up around the 50ish mark. This has me worried since people say ASUS under states the actual temps by about 5 to 10 degrees and i heard that running your cpu around 60 is not good for your cpu. Any one have any insight or reassurances?

You could always disable and go full tilt when you game/

I tried motherboard monitor 5 freeware and it had my temps idle around 33-34C which is much closer to the estimate you gave me so I don't feel as bad... although the fan regulator on my motherboard might have to be disabled b/c it is driving me nuts going up and down all the time... thanks for all the help...
