need suggestions for new video card. budget is $340. have my rig on my sig. and i'm a die hard CS:S player. cuz it's the only game that i play for free online. :D Fry's has the evga 8800gts 320mb for $279 and change. should i go with fry's or get it online? post link if you can. thanks

Excellent choice, and yep, pretty much. Open case, unscrew old card, remove, place in new card and make sure its seated, hook up power connectors, and you *should* be good to go since they are both nVidia and they use a universal driver but if you have issues then you should try removing the old drivers and updating to the newest release. You should update to the newest release anyway actually, if you havent already.

Boot in safe mode, use DriverCleaner, reinstall latest betas (163.67 as of now) for Forceware. Good to go.

installed this card today put it on ran 3dmark06 and hit 10,784 on stock 513 core 792 mem and the temp is 63c while i type. when i ran 3dmark06 temp went up to 76c. is that too high or what and is my score on 3dmark looks ok? i'm running xp btw and the rest is on my sig.
 
That's a pretty good score with a dual core and a GTS at stock speeds, but XP helps vs. Vista a bit for 3DMark 06.

So long as the card stays under 85C under load I wouldn't worry too much, but you can always work on case airflow if you're concerned. Some people's cards idle at what yours is loading at without issue.
 
These suckers eat power and create too much heat.

I want a refresh with lower heat and power output. I hate heat from electronics. :mad:
 
agreed, reminds me to crying out loud again, when will those GPU taking the similar path like CPU, modern & efficient.

it's been quite a while since the last time we need to upgrade our PSU in order to handle our brand new CPU, damn i want the very same thing with GFX card now, lower thy power consumption and heat, grr..:confused:
 
it blows the hot air through the vent, out of your case, hopefully you have good air flow inside your case.
 
yeah nvidia is way to go i think for dx 10-10.1. IF nvidias offering this christmas does end up being a high end dx 10.1 part (who knows with all these different rumors everywhere), im gonna sell my 2900 XT and buy that.
 
if cs:s is all you play why on earth would you spend more money on this system, its not like its a demanding game? Also his sig says he has an 8800 gts 640 mb, so a 320 mb woudnt work anyway.
 
Because the 8800s kick ass and they are pretty much future proof, for the next couple months at least. So if he wanted to get, say, the Crysis demo or Bioshock or World In Conflict then he could play them on the max settings on his 22".

A GPU is way more complicated and much more powerful then any CPU so there for it uses more electricity thereby producing more heat. Watt to Flop a GPU is much more efficient then a CPU.
 
I don't care how complicated or powerful it is. I don't like heat from electronic equipment. I also can't stand apartments unless it was built like a house with natural wood instead of concrete.
 
Reason why i went with the 640 is because just incase i decide to play diff game i don't have to worry about not wont be able to run it with the 320.i knew the 320 is more than enough with the CS:S but i wanted to play diff games too. i say it's better to have it and don't need it and not have it and need it :p. i also have Bioshock demo and before i install the 8800 the game was choppy with my 7600gt and after installing the new card it was flawless so i'm happy with the 8800gts 640. now on the temp is there other after market air cooler that will work with the 8800? thanks again to all the replies.

Zalman has a couple of coolers, but the most popular aftermarket option for the 8800s is Thermalright's HR-03 Plus.
