Another Successfully Kickstarted Game Cancelled

ehh... Kickstarter is not a pre-order system...

No surprise here...

Simple question: have legitimate, high-quality games been produced as a result of Kickstarter?
Throw enough spaghetti on a wall, and maybe a piece or two of pasta and some sauce will stick. Doesn't mean that's particularly efficient or a good idea.

The good thing about traditional investment systems is that the investor that is taking the risk not only reaps rewards from it, but they are involved in more thorough vetting and oversight than your typical kickstarter which involves random impulse buys based on often nothing more than a 30 second sales pitch since the dollar amounts are small for any individual.

As with all things, just have to spend your money wisely. Spending it on the hopes of the Yogscast making a game? Not so wise.

The only downside of this strategy is that the traditional investors don't necessarily like the same games we do ... if all we want is more Call of Duties, Battlefields, Farcrys, and Grand Theft Autos then we can rely on traditional investors ... if we want mostly console ports (which guarantee the largest number of sales) then we can rely on traditional investors ... but if we want games like Pillars of Eternity, Torment, Wasteland 2, or Grim Dawn then we need alternate methods of funding (since these have limited appeal to traditional investors)

That said, KS should restructure their process for software and hardware projects to require much higher levels of disclosure on business plans, team resumes, and the overall risk prospectus ... I really don't understand why some people hate KS so much ... traditional publisher funding is still occurring (since that is the only way to make a 10 million dollar plus project) ... VC funding still exists although that will only favor the full company who has an eventual plan of going public (which means even Valve wouldn't be interesting to a VC investor) ... if folks really want to continue with publisher funded projects they should stop whining about them so much (since all the penalties associated with publisher games are the price for their money ;) )

sorry but kickstarter is dumb. it's great for developers, but why would i invest money into a risky project without any real reward. i'm going to lend some stranger money in the hopes that i'll get a digital hat?? they should give out money on the backend, so that it will be more like a real investment, that would be interesting.

Depends upon what you define as "high-quality", lots of "retro" games have been produced, FTL is one that I enjoy a lot, but yeah doesn't look like that much programming went into it. The Shadowrun game also came out, not sure how high quality that is, ditto with Wasteland 2 (it's in beta now not released).

putting money into a kickstarter project.....

you may as well get a tattoo saying "sucker!" across your chest :D

When the fuck is Star Citizen supposed to be out? I'm surprised there's a $15,000 donation bullshit..

People who invest in Kickstarter does so to enable a project that will never happen in the conventional way. There is a risk to everything, people act like only Kickstarter project can fail while we've see many projects funded the traditional way have failed as well. Studious have gone bankrupt long before there was Kickstarter.

Just like any investment, there will always be failed projects in Kickstarter, but projects failing and studios closing down are not unique to Kickstarter. People just love taking this exceptions as an example to bash Kickstarter as if it's something that only happens here.

So they got over 500k in funding, twice their original estimate, and they could not even make an INITIAL alpha release of what is essentially Minecraft 2? Talk about incompetence...
