Another stuttering issue with BFG 6800 GT

Well, this is similar to the other thread, except that poster resolved the issue by unplugging their parallel port printer. Strange. I've tried about all I can think of to get the stuttering to go away, including

1) turning on and off aa/af
2) turning on and off vsync
3) running the card both overclocked and at stock (my system is watercooled, and after running rthdribl for 30 minutes at the timings in my sig, my core never broke 52 C).
4) Tried the 66.76, 66.77, 66.76, and 66.81 drivers
5) Complete OS reinstall (Windows XP Pro with SP2 integrated), and updating this
6) Tried with fastwrites on and off
7) Keeping AGP apeture size is at 256 mb (I have 1 GB of ram). I havent tried 512, but I highly doubt this will fix the issue
8) Making sure the system is running at AGP 8x
9) Complete uninstallation of antivirus followed by chipset and display driver reinstall
10) Lowering my already prime95 stable cpu overclock so there is less stress on the ram

So far, I have noticed this in doom 3 only, although I haven't tested D3D yet. Strangely enough, this phenomenon does not occur in counter-strike when using opengl. Maybe this only happens in very taxing games, which would explain this theory:

Could it be my 350W PSU? It only has 12 A on the 12V rail, but I have encountered no long pauses or complete stops during gaming, so I'm thinking lack of power isnt the issue. I just get stuttering every 2 or 3 seconds, more specifically, when I walk, it seems like i take a very small step backwards for a split second, then it jumps back to where I was. I would expect (perhaps I am wrong) butter smooth movements with a GT, especially at lower resolutions.

I would be very grateful if anyone could offer some assistance.

i'm thinking it's you psu. i didn't know 12 on the 12v rail is enough for the 6800gt. maybe one with 24 on the 12v rail will help a lot

Change that PSU for a quality one with at least 20A on the 12v before you kill your GT ;)

Hmm..but still...would this cause stuttering? I can see pauses and freezes...but stuttering seems like it would be caused by something else...but hey, I could be wrong.

I think why my stuttering issue went away was because an irq address in my bios was doing something strange. I know this sounds retarded, but try disconnecting things one at a time until you fix it. Also check this... you know 3d flowerbox, that ancient screensaver, well preview that and see if that stutters. Thats how I knew something was up, when I basically set windows to no hardware acceleration and still got the stutters.

Just trying to help.

If your GPU isnt getting enough power to run properly it could be going between low power 3d and full 3d, and that would cause the problem you describe. A new PSU isnt going to hurt regardless, 12A on the 12v is way low.

And I thank you for the help, along with everyone else. I rain the 3dflowerbox, and it does stutter. I lowered it to the minimum hardware accel to used directdraw, and it still stuttered. Maybe it is my power supply.

I am going to try pulling some stuff, NIC's etc. I'll also take a look in the BIOS. The thing is, video card is on its own IRQ:
IRQ%20settings.JPG

*shrugs*

If I can get ahold of another PSU, I'll run it directly to my video card. In the meantime, im gonna try everything I can...

I've been messing with my comp as of late trying to nail down my problem as well. It's stuttering in Doom 3 only. I first noted when I wanted to replay doom3 cranked and the first video that says ID software presents Doom 3 was missing and then skipped to the UAC company intro play.

Other tests (KOTOR, Star Wars Battlefront, Quake3, etc) do not stutter at 1600x1200 and cranked to max quality.

I've messed with IRQ conflicts (USB/Vid card on same IRQ 16)
Unplugged all USB (MX1000 is only one used on usb at moment, so tried PS/2 adapter)
I've played with BIOS settings, ram timings, windows settings, different driver versions. 66.xx. I've tried suggestions from this thread and the XFX 6800GT thread that came before it.

I've nailed it down to good old texture thrashing.

If you're willing to live with a little compression but can't stand the thought of no AA or AF, enable it in the display control panel.

I can run 1600x1200 med quality, 8xAF 4xAA 66.70 drivers smoothly now on most levels of doom 3 I've tested. I have noted some minor compression artifacts, just the standard stuff when you compress a texture, but its trivial compared to have a smooth framerate that doesn't detract from the game play experience. Also running 16x12 res makes it less noticable. Basically you have to really be an IQ freak and nitpick like mad to find the discolorations.

I will test out with 1 GB mem soon, but I suspect it won't really make a difference as those of you who also suffer from this have 1GB already. I think it comes down to whenever it has to swap from main memory as I have the virtual memory switch in doom 3 disabled. This texture thrashing is most apparant in the first level.

I'm running a P42.6@3.35Ghz
Abit IC7-G
2x256MB PC3500 hyperX RAM
BFG 6800 GT OC 256 MB @ 415/1.08
Enermax 465 PSU Dual Fan
Win2k

Ok, thanks a ton for the response. I will try it asap. But, when you say "enable it in the display control panel", what exactly is the setting called. I am using the 66.81 drivers. Its still a 66.xx series, so I would think that this setting would still be there.

Thanks.

I was suffering Stuttering issues with my BFG 6800 GT OC but I was able to determine the cause and fix this. I had two monitors hooked up to my 6800. I noticed stuttering in some games like doom 3. But when I disabled one monitor (unclicked extend desktop to this monitor) it fixed the problem.

You're system is about the same performance level as mine. I run Doom 3 at 1600x1200 in high quality and it's fine. I don't use Ultra Quality as uncompressed textures just deliver to much of a performance hit.

I've got another machine that's close to my main rig except that it's got 512MB of ram instead of 1GB. In UT2004 it has a kind of stuttering problem. I think it's swapping to disk and that's why it doesn't perform like my main rig. It's got an X800Pro which isn't that much slower than my 6800GT in UT2004. Not if my GT is clocked at stock speeds anyway.

A memory upgrade would help you out alot.

Since I've gone back to the 66.70 drivers my screen has changed a bit, but whether or not you have coolbits 2.0 installed, I recall there is a performance/image quality screen available with seperate opengl and direct3d tabs. On the performance part, you should find anti aliasing settings there along with anisotropic filtering options. I believe its there you can set them.

Also there's an option that has "optimizations" you can choose between High Performance and High Quality. Choose High Quality.

Is your AGP bus running in spec or is it overclocked? Try running it in spec if it's overclocked.

It may not be your graphics card that is stuttering. It may be something like your PC is reading from your HDD. Maybe you don't have enough ram or your PC has a lot of processes using up memory and it's task swaping to the HDD when you are playing.

Maybe your HDD is configured incorrectly and it can't read game files quickly from the HDD. Try running HDTach and see if your HDDs are fast. A friend of mine had a slow computer and it turned out he didn't have his IDE driver installed.

Some task or service could be running in the background. Sometimes Windows will run some stupid service like the indexing service or something while you are playing a game. Go find a guide on how to remove a lot of the services and free up resources. You will be amazed at what kind of a performance hit your PC will take from junk running in the background.

I dont think there is anything running in the background that is causing interference. I have a gig, and i usually have 780-820 MB free in task manager. This is more than enough. My cpu usage is also low.

My agp bus is always in spec, as it is locked on my board.

I'll take a look at my HD, though, but really the game shouldn't reference it because I have so much ram and a 256 MB video card...(keep in mind that it stutters even at the lowest settings).

I bought a new PSU and I'm waiting for it to arrive, hopefully that fixes the problem. I have a feeling that it might be the problem.

Well, I discovered something interesting. I installed UT2k4 and started to play. I experienced no stuttering like I do in doom 3, if I did i didnt notice it, even with everything at high, at 1280x1024, and with high aa/af.

Edit:
I played tribes 2 for a bit, and I got some stuttering, but extremely little. Really you wouldnt notice it if you werent looking for it. Both tribes2 and Doom 3 run off opengl. Weird, most of the time people have problems with direct3d when using Nvidia...

There is a heavy amount of stuttering with doom3, though. This happens even when my framerates are at 60fps, so its not just chugging.

I'll try a few more games if i can find some (i didnt bring many with me to college)

Anyway, does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this?

I just tried playing doom3 and I get more shuttering now with my 6800GT than I did with my 9800pro

I'll grab some more ram and see if it helps. Will probably transfer over to sata drives too. I'm sure I got some spare dual channel sets around the sty.

I asked around the campus here, and someone said it could be my sata drivers, as I have never updated them. He also said it could be the soundstorm audio (even though I have updated drivers). I'll look into it and post the result here.

Using SB Live 5.1 here, not onboard sound. Would have tested but I fuxored my files and have about 30 gb of mp3's and avi's gathered over the past 8 years to recover... wouldn't shed a tear if it was pr0n though... damn life sux at times...

Keep it in perspective man. You have it MUCH better than at least 90% of the human population.

Really really really really look at the PSU. I was having a problem with stuttering with my Ti4200 & BFG 6800GTOC... until I swapped out the PSU... the 12v was running at 10.7-11.1 and I noticed it with MBM. I put a new PSU and no more stutter.

Just do it.

-R

The loss of my stuff is in addition to my other woes... and trust me 90% of the population wouldn't want what's been happening in my life... but that's not up for discussion here.

I nailed down my stuttering issue with 2 things. First a reinstall of doom 3 (forced by my recent hdd corruption). I think even though I had high quality on, the ultra quality settings I messed around was on not to mention that when I think about it I had identical performance.

Also it doesn't hurt to have 1gb of ram if you do mess with ultra quality. But its back to high quality now and all better.

Note the stutter goes away for me when I play with 1 gb ram. You can still tell when it hits the main mem though like a ms thought when opening doors and calculating shadows, but not noticable unless you nit pick

I have a 450 Watt Enermax with 33A on the 12 V rail, added up, my devices don't get close to 10. That leaves a nice 23A+ for the GT. Damn greedy beast. could do me the courtesy of clocking higher than 415/1.08...

I fixed my problem by upping the voltage to my AGP. It's a power issue. My PSU is 380W.

Ok, I have done a number of things, and the stuttering is only in doom 3. Here are the recent things that I have tried:

-Swapped out 350W PSU for Enermax 431W (20 A on 12V rail, more than enough).
-Disabled onboard soundstorm sound
-ran card and system at stock. There are no overheating issues (system is w/c'd)
-tweaked doom3 settings (such as seta_cachemegs or whatever and the cachemink value).

I see a lot of HDD light activity, which means there is a lot of swapping. Shouldn't this not be happening with 1 GB of ram and a geforce 6800 GT? Keep in mind, this happens whether im at low 640x480 noaa/noaf, or high 1152x864 w/ aa/af. There is something wrong. I should definetly not get stuttering at the lowest settings...

I looked into drivers for my Silicon Image SATA controller, and possibly updating the firmware (I have an abit nf7-s 2.0) but I am a little confused as to which driver/firmware would be best.

Note that I have 1 HDD on just IDE, the other using an IDE -> SATA converter. I have also tried both using and not using the NVIDIA SW IDE driver. No difference, I still get stutters.

Any ideas? Its annoying, because ut2k4, tribes2, and all sorts of games run as smooth as butter, but not doom 3.

Thanks.

i get the same thing randomly when i play Bfv. I think i fixxed the problem buy increasing the agp voltage ( i beleive my mobo was undervolting it a little) i experienced the same kind of stuttering once more after i increased the voltage but it may have just been lagg, i will tell you more as i find it.

i t appears to continue too stutter. lag is the correct word for it. it should not lag like it is , i might return it to compusa for a x800 pro. i know soime of the BBa card are vivo, any help picking?

Very similar problem - upgrading my PSU to 430W Antec TP (26A on 12V) didn't help.

But here's a noob question - does it matter WHICH molex I connect to the GT as long as it has a 'wire' all to itself? Also, where is the AGP voltage and what should it be set to? (Asus P4P800 Dlx). Finally, MUST you flash the mobo BIOS, or is updating the chipset drivers enough?

I'm thinking it's RAM - I have 512 PC3200 Samsungv(crap) - unfortunately can't afford to upgrade right this second. Just spent ~$500 (GT + Antec) with poor Doom 3 performance... :(

OH - I noticed that my GT is on the same IRQ as my USB devices (only using a USB mouse at the time) - is this bad and how do I get the GT on a solo IRQ (I think I have 2 or 3 free right now)?

Test you HDD performance with HDTach. The read only version is free.

I don't think this will make a difference. The HDD should only be referenced every once in a while with 1GB and a 256 MB card. Strangely, the light is very active during gameplay. This is true for even the lowest setting.

I have tried updating my SATA drivers...no luck. I have also tried upping my AGP voltage. I am beginning to think it is simply a doom3 setting, although I've gone through quite a few and I have been unable to come to a conclusion or a fix.

Sigh.

DarkenReaper57 - I have a very similar problem. I notice constant HDD activity during Doom 3, especially accessing sounds for some reason. I know this point has been alluded to before, but if your RAM isn't up to snuff (like mine), the HDD is used for virtual memory = slow. Even when I run D3 at low settings, I get the stutters - constantly accessing the HDD. New RAM is on my list...for now I'll finish CoD, BFV, etc. at 1600x1280...not too shabby.

Make sure you have precaching on in Doom3 (afaik it's the default, but could have gotten disabled if you were fiddling about benchmarking...?)
If your BIOS supports I/O prefetch enable it.
Make sure your HD's are running in UDMA mode not PIO mode.
Defrag the harddrive. Fragmentation kills Doom 3.

What happens if you lower all the settings down to minimum just as a test? Obviously I don't expect you to play like that, it'd just be interesting to see if the problem is still there.

Bump. I also get doom3 only stuttering on my 6800GT OC at all settings, down to the lowest.

How do you change your IRQ settings to take the USB off of the same channel as your video card, and does upgrading your SATA drivers have any effect?

I see the hard disk light coming on a lot, which really shouldn't happen.

EDIT: If anyone would take a look at my sig and tell me where I might have a problem, I would very much appreciate it.

I tried updating my SATA drivers for my Abit NF7-S 2.0, no luck. One thing I havent tried is putting both my drives on just IDE, since one is on a IDE->SATA adapter(I have been to lazy, lol). I really dont think that will help, though...

Like I said before, I get very minor stuttering in many titles (you couldn't really tell unless you were looking for it). In doom 3, however, the frames stutter every second or so.

Here are the contents of my doom3 config file if anyone would like to help me out:

Thanks a ton for anyone who takes the time to help me out.

I believe when running Doom3 you are drawing quite a bit more power than other games. The reason I say this is because generally my GPU temps are much higher running Doom 3.

I changed my virtual memory cache from 768/1568 megs min/max to 1568/3000 min/max and the stuttering is gone. I also changed to medium quality textures at 1600x1200 -- even so it looks simply amazing, and butter smooth.

I think it is my HD: I was noticing a lot of writes when the stuttering was going on, but fewer now. Maybe the texture compression was writing a lot to the HD because I only have 512 megs of ram? I don't specifically know if this has anything to do with the problem, but since it works I am happy.

Have you tried reinstalling Doom 3 to reset all the options back to their defaults? You may need to manually backup and clean the install folder after uninstalling and before reinstalling.

Have you tried reinstalling Doom 3 to reset all the options back to their defaults? You may need to manually backup and clean the install folder after uninstalling and before reinstalling.

I did reinstall doom 3 when I reloaded my OS, although I do not think I went in and manually deleted all files beforehand (I install applications onto a separate partition). I'll be sure to look into this, too.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Ok, I tried changing my virtual memory to 1568/3000. No change. I still get stuttering.

I also tried a complete uninstall, followed by the deletion of remaining files, reboot, then reinstall. No worky.

I thought of a few new things to try:

1. Still havent tried removing my SATA->IDE connector, and using straight IDE for my HD with the OS and program files on it.

2. I am not running in dual channel mode. I will try this, and also run benchmarks (such as 3dmark 2003) to see if there is a performance increase or decrease, along with seeing if it fixes doom 3.

3. There are new 66.93 drivers out from NVIDIA. I have read that people have issues with these (I am currently running 66.81 btw) but maybe I'll give them a try.

Does anyone else have some suggestions? This is becoming an annoyance...I bought this card to get a great gameplay experience in many games, especially doom 3.

Thanks.

Try 61.77s for shits and giggles. Fixed my stuttering issue with FC.
