just covering all bases here, but the bottom of the heatsink that came with my retail amd 64 3500+ has like.. a little grey sticky tacky square on it. ithis is the thermal stuff amd includes right? i bought some arctic sivler 5 so i can scrape this stuff of with a cridet card or something right?

yep, scrap that stuff off and then clean the bottom of the heat-sink off with a lint-free cloth and 91% alcohol.

Be sure to be neat with the application of the Arctic silver. And I would recommend wearing rubber gloves when applying it.

Like rebelleader said....use care when applying it, and use that same "cridet" card to apply it in a smooth thin layer.
ok so i should spread it out before i put the heatsink on it? as in, dont do the "squaish the bead" of it. how much should i squeeze down at first before i spreadi t around? a bead? or more?
also, how much should i spread it around i mean? as in.. 75% of the processors surface area or more? or less?
I could be wrong here, so anyone feel free to jump in, but you will want to cover ALL of the CPU core with the AS.
Also, add a little at a time...it doesn't take a large amount of AS to cover a core. Add some, spread it around until you can't spread it any more, then add a little more; repeating that process until it is covered fully in a thin layer.
Then you will want to line up your heatsink so that you just have to press down on it and not have to move it side to side or back and forth.
The reason to add a little at a time and spread, is that it is easier to spread a little at a time and add more as you need it, rather than try and clean up any spills that you may encounter. Also remember that you don't want any of that stuff to get on the mobo....it is conductive if I am not mistaken.
ps. just razzing you on the spelling, Heaven knows how many times I have missspelled things.

Yes it is quite conductive as you will read in several posts. That is the only downfall to AS.
There are also some other methods I have seen used with AthlonXPs. (Not for 64s) Put a drop of AS on the center of the core of the processor. Hold the HS directly over the top turned 45 degrees. Put the HS straight down on the core and turn the other 45 degrees needed to make the ZIF socket pins line up with the HS connector.
But for the most part, I just take a credit card and apply a very thin layer of AS on the top of the core and from there carefully place the HS down on the core.

blegh. i used my acetone to clean of the heatsink. i feel light headed but thats ok, its better than being otuside in the 33*f weather raining. anyways, when i tip the heatsink to the side ic an barely see a small discolored square. i rubbed the hell out of this and i am pretty sure i went overkill on it but whatever. its all good.

Like I said.. there have been some other methods that I have *seen*. I have also seen some people forget to put the thermal compound on the processor... lol. I do none other than the trusty credit card method myself.
just make sure its a credit card you aren't using any more of course. my university library card is no longer functional from using it to apply AS lol. i dont know if it demagnitized it somehow or what but it doesnt work with they're scanners anymore heh. ps. those stupid credit card offers that get sent to you in the mail with the fake cards in them might be a good idea.
