Another Q9450 Overclock

Huh? I couldn't find 2GB PC8000 sticks on G.Skill's web site with 1.8V. Sounds like RAM Nirvana. Can you tell me which ones you bought?

Robert

It's this one: G.Skill F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ

I see it is actually rated at 2.0v - 2.1v but it would only need that at rated speeds (500Mhz). And since I am running it at 1:1 ratio it's actually underclocked to 400Mhz and at this speed it only needs 1.8v.

This is my CPU-Z shot:

What is your vcore at for your 3.2 overclock if you dont mind me asking.

Hope this screenshot helps:

I made the shot after I ran Prime since I have EIST (or whatever is it called) turned on and as you can see CPU Volt gets to 1.24 (it actually switches between 1.23 and 1.24).
Under browsing or sitting on the desktop it is 1.17V.

hi people im getting a Q9450 soon as soon as i decided on a motherboard, i was hoping to get one of the new 780i mobos as i want to use pc2 8500+ 1066mhz ram with the cpu but i read some reviews and they say that the evga/asus 780i mobo o/c badlly, so i then thought i would take a look at the intel mobos like the Asus Rampage Formula Intel X48 as i have never had one and always had nvidia's like the 680i.

ok my problem with the intell mobo's like the Asus Rampage Formula Intel X48 is that they dont have the same unlink mode that my 680i has or the new 780i so i will have to run my ram at lower speeds, i would like to hit 4ghz on the Q9450 but it would seems that 3.6ghz is about the limit after reading this thread which if im right that would be...

Q9450 -- 450Mhz -- 1800QDR -- 8x -- 1:1 / 900Mhz -- =3600

if this is true is their anyway with the Asus Rampage Formula Intel X48 to get the ram to run at 1066mhz with a 3.6ghz o/c

EDIT: will the 780i mobos o/c the Q9450 as well as the x48

750i or 790i or X38 or X48

P35 or 780i will run them, but are not built specificly for them. I'm *very* happy with my 790i. Note X3350 = xeon version of Q9450 (same same).

Wow what bios are you running? I dont even have the option to set 1.145vcore in my bios. Im thinking I may sell off my OCZ 800mhz and pick up some of those G-skill sticks.

I kept trying to get prime from crashing all day trying to get 3.4ghz stable. It would not drop a core it would just have an error message pop up and quit running completly. I had my vcore at 1.3375v in bios and mch at 1.41v and twice after 6 hrs prime would just die. I dont know what else to do so I guess I will just set my sights lower and try to get stable at 3.2. I am seriously considering the g-skill though I read on the abit forums that it works well with the ip35 pro. I have a feeling my ram is holding me back. I hope thats what it is anyway.

just built a 9450 based system for a friend.
Asus Rampage Formula
4 Gigs Gskill PC2 8500 (2x2)
3.6 GHZ Orthos stable with only a slight bump in vcore.

Using Skythe Orochi will a 56CFM Arctic cooling fan.
3870X2 (soon to be crossfire X with another one)

score 18800 in 3DM06.

Fastest machine i have ever built.

Wow what bios are you running?

I have the latest official version - v16.

Before i bought the G.Skill RAM i was also thinking of OCZ and other popular brands. But after browsing through the Abit forums I saw people have problems with other brands of RAM so I decided to buy G.Skill. No problems so far!

Yeah I read that too but it was after I already ordered the OCZ:( I have some gskill the same spec as yours arriving tomorrow. Hopefully that will get me a better overclock with less voltage. I had it prime stable overnight at 3.4ghz with 1.39v core and 1.44mch 1.13vtt My fan was pretty loud at 2500 rpm to keep it around 57c though with that voltage. I would like to back off the voltages a bit and still get 3.4 so I will find out if the new ram helps with that.

Just out of curiosity did you try going higher than 400fsb to see if you could get a higher overclock or is it just not worth it for what you need?

I did try going higher. After I bumped the vcore 5times up from current setting and still not being stable at 426Mhz I concluded it is not worth the heat, noise, electricity and risk. I'm running the machine 24/7 so I prefer stability over speed and have to think about long term too. And in the end its only 200Mhz.
But on the other hand I didn't try very hard...for example I didn't even bump NB voltage or any other voltages (except vcore) even a bit, didn't try to manually set RAM settings, didn't disable EIST, etc. So when I'll have some time I may try again with more tweaking.

This is helpful info. I too am concerned also since I will be running it 24/7. I found raising the nb voltage made a big difference. Of course I had to go to 1.44 so like you said is the benefit really there to justify such high voltage.

You may not have to up it very much like the first two posters in this thread to get it stable. I had to raise mine to 1.44v so that is not going to work out long term I think. I will let you know my results when the new sticks get here.

Anybody have a quick-and-dirty template of what changes to make in a typical BIOS for a mild overclock to 400Mhz bus? Would the NB need to be upped at all?

I just want to go to 3 - 3.2Ghz on a Q9450. Nice balance between speed and power usage.

None.. leave it on auto and you'll be fine.

Hey all,

I have been jealously watching this thread since early April, as I have been slowly scraping together spare change so that I could finish buying all the parts for my new gaming rig. So anyway, in anticipation of the UPS guy dropping off my last shipment from newegg on wed, I hope you don't mind my joining in. Better late than never I hope? I am very excited and nervous as this is my first OC attempt since I fried a 3.0ghz socket 475 about 3 or 4 years ago... Since that fatal day I have been sticking with stock, but it seems to me that not overclocking the Q9450 is a crime!

Anyway, I'll stop jabbering... like I said I'm excited.
System specs for those who are interested:

NZXT Hush
Zalman ZM750-HP 750W
ABIT IP35 Pro
Q9450
Mushkin 4GB DDR2 1066
Zalman CNPS9700
GeForce 9800 GX2 KO

The 9800 GX2 has me nervous...been reading a lot of people talking about heat problems, and since my system is going to be air-cooled, I went ahead and ordered some replacement 120mm case fans that are rated for 75-80 CFM. I also ordered a Thermaltake TMG SL1 PCI slot fan to hopefully suck some of that extra heat out of my case. Hopefully this will be enough cooling... we will find out on wed night, wish me luck!

If anyone has any suggestions, hints or comments, please let me know. I hope to have everything setup and ready to go by the 16th for the Age of Conan pre-release... been waiting for this game for almost 5 years..

Yeoman ..... is that 3.82ghz on air?! If so, very nice indeed..

Well, I finally got everything yesterday.. put everything togeather only to get a ton of beeping and flashing post codes. <sigh> Will continue troubleshooting tonight, but at the moment can't even get my rig to boot.. much less OC. :(

Nice clocks. Now if I could just find someplace to buy one. Maybe in a few weeks.

I got mine at MicroCenter at a fairly reasonable price, and they appear to be in stock
Here is a Link .. Now if only I could get mine to work

Just picked up one of these 2 days ago and I hit 3.62GHz today..

That's about where I ended up. That's a great result on a P35 MB.
