another q6600 build for games

after reading the forum, here is what i came up with. any advise will help. keep in mind i will not go SLI or raid.

-q6600 (trying to overclock it to 3.4GHZ)
-case (antec p180 or CM 690)
-motherboard (ABIT IP35-E)
-ram (G.Skill 4GB(2x2GB) DDR2-800)
-PSU (XCilo 450W[have].will upgrade if needed(kinda want to wait to see what the new gen. on video card needs),Corsair HX620W if needed now.
-Video card ( 7900GS[have], waiting for the new card)
-cooling (ZALMAN CNPS9500 [have])
-sound card (x-fi music[have])
-drive (plexor drive. anyone knows which model is good)
-hard drive (74 gig raptor [have] , need advice on a storage one 750 gig perfer seagate too)

so what do you think?
 
case antec P180 is outdated. You should get at least P182 instead.
 
P180 outdated? There's so many things wrong with that statement, I'm not going to start. I love my P180.

PSU: Go Corsair, stable and silent.
HD: Can't go wrong with Seagate. I'd go with dual 320's, best Gig/Dollar ratio last time I looked.
 
If your budget allows, Id recommend going for water cooling. I know that 3.4 is your goal, but once you reach that its hard to stop your self from pushing for more.
 
I just built a Q6600 gaming rig over this past weekend. Let me say first of all that you will not regret it. I had an FX-60 at 2.9 prior – same video card - and the stock 2.4 on the quad destroyed it in CS:S stress, to the tune of 40 fps. I started my OC last night and pushed it to 3.0ghz (stock volts!) and got another 20 frames for 273fps @ 1200 x 1600, 8xMSAA, 16x AF, all settings maximum. Yikes! Supreme Commander and Company of Heroes, both huge resource hogs, run like a dream.

Make sure the chip you get is a G0 step – ClubIT.com guarantees you’ll get the chip you want. I ordered mine from the Egg before I knew about the ClubIT setup and did manage to get a G0 so you could be fine going either route.

I went with Corsair memory but due to my past experience with them I doubled up on my order and sure enough I had a nightmare install because of a ridiculously bad stick (over 550 errors in memtest, test 1). Second set was fine, luckily. I n00bed it up and went with Dominator 1066. 800 may be a better choice for OCing, but so far everything is fine.

If you’re going to OC get a good case with good airflow. The Antec 900 is awesome for the money. I went with a CM Stacker 830 and it is an incredible thing, but on the expensive side.

I’m a WD guy for HDs – I’ve had my 2 raptors in a Raid 0 for over a year and a half of heavy use – not even a hiccup.

The Zerotherm BTF90 cools better than the Zalman at a lower price – be sure to check it out.
 
The P182 also has 2 grommeted holes for external water cooling lines. There are also a few other redesign changes. Such as the top and rear fan speed control on the outside of the case at the rear.
 
the p180b is essentially a black p182. So you can save a little money but getting the p180b
 
For cooling, I recommand the Tuniq Tower 120 ultra or the thermright 120 extreme. that Zalman 9500 isnt gonna be enough for the clocks your trying to get.
 
i dont understand,why chose quad core,when mobos and vgas its weak,and old.
rigs based on quad core ,must have good mobos and vga's.
Salle quad core and buy dual core,and vga minimum 8800gts 320mb.

DDR2 800 will get you to 3.6ghz - I would think that will be around the top for air cooling
The mobo is a good choice, you will want to get the good power supply, the abit boards are picky about them.

Whatever ram you pick, be mindfull that if it's not 1.8volts you may need to boot the board with a different stick of ram first, and then up the ram voltage before putting it in.
 
Ok so long as you get a GO stepping of Q6600 it should make it to 3.4

Get the p182 over the p180, it is much better for cable management (if you are going to spend 50 bucks on a zalman 9500 or like 80 bucks on a thermalright u120 xtreme then you might as well spend $20 bucks more and get the better case. It will make more of a difference than the cooler.

I don't really like the mobo, but it will do what you are looking for.

why 4gb? now is really not the time to spend a lot on ddr2

PSU get a new one, the hx620 is a good choice

video card a bit weak right now but will do the job for most games

plexor is not as good as it use to be, I think they got bought or something. just go with samsung/liteon etc... save 50 bucks

750gb cost more than 2 500gbs, but you really cant go wrong with WD/seagate.
