Another Peltier question/problem

Ok, I have a 55 wat pelt running on a 350 wat power supply all by it self and its running great. BUT I purchased a 95 wat peltier to get things a little cooler. When I plug this into the power supply it shuts down after like 1 second. Is the pelt trying to draw to much power? I was looking around and saw some cheap 600W power supplies, cheaper than the 350 I got. Do you think these cheap 600W supplies will handle this 95W pelt?

I plug the pelt into the 4pin molex and I'm assuming that this is the +12 volt line, the 600W supplies I've been looking at are rated at 24A on the 12 volt line. So i think it could handle it? What do you guys think? The only other thing on the power supply will be a couple 80mm fans, and one 120 mm.

I'm no expert, but I think you may be better off going with a power supply made for TECs. From the way things sound, you're trying to use just a regular PC PSU to run it, and with a low power peltier that isn't a problem, but with higher power ones they start to overdraw. Maybe your PSU is just bad?

is this a 350w powering your system as well? if so, im surprised it hasnt exploded yet. way WAY too much load. get a new PSU for your comp and use the old 350 to power the TEC.

also what are you cooling, both of those are WAY too small for processors...

/edit: oh yeh about cheap PSU's, dont, they crap out after 6 months. get an antec 412 for your comp and as i said, reuse the 350 for the TEC

Check the specs on your power supply to see what the maximum current or power output is for the 12V line. You may be drawing too much from it. If so, you should buy a plain old 12V power supply, you have no need for all the other voltages that a PC power supply provides.

After trying to plug the 95W peltier and having the power supply shut down on me, I can plug in the 55W and it works fine. I've been looking around and found that the 95w runs at the same voltage, and only increases the amp load by 2. so the 55 is 15.1v 6a, and the 95 is 15v 8a. Does not seem like a huge difference but i guess its to much for my 350w power supplie. I was looking at the powersupplies made for peltiers and crap there like 130. I just want to know if a 600W supply could handle this load. Anyone here running their pelt on an ATX power supply?

EDIT: Thanks for the replies, the ONLY thing that the power supply will have to power is the pelt. The reason I want to use an ATX supply rather than a straight 12v power supply made for TEC's is because those are over 100 bucks.

or completly ignore my post. DONT DO IT. Buy a nice PSU for your comp, use your old one JUST for pelts.

no prob. i really do want to know what youre cooling because those pelts will NOT work well on a proc.

Right now not cooling anything, testing their reliability, and I want to air cool the pelt so seeing what fans will work with what size heatsink. With the 55W, a stock barton heatsink and fan is doing a good job keeping the hot side cool. Yes i know i will have to take into account the heat that is pumped away from whatever I am cooling but that will be later. I just need to get this damm 95W ON!:D

dude, you will cook your processor if you use those tecs....

if you are cooling a chip, do not run anything under 226watts.

Where did you get the 95w pelt?? have you tried running 80w pelt on that 350 psu? I'm no expert but maybe this link with 550PSU and output of12v@36Amp will work and power up that 95 pelt... I'm thinkin of running two 80w pelt on my new Fortron 300w PSU(the psu will only power up 5 120mm[probbably I will hook the 5 fans in a Vantec 305 nexus fans] and a pump) I can't buy the 80 watt pelt yet coz I'm not sure if it'll work on that PSU with those components running there too(and I will cool down the pelt with HSF) If someone thinks that it will workout tell me thnkx

He's right, I've done it... :(

Yes I will deff not be cooling my processor with this 95W pelt. What I am trying to figure out is the reason why my Power Supply is turning off when i connect the pelt to it. I am assuming it is doing this because it is trying to draw to much power. So I want to know, 1. is that the reason why it is turning off. 2. If that is the reason than would a 600W cheapo power supply get the job done.

The only thing that will be on the power supply is 1 Pelt, 2 80mm fans, 1 120mm fan. That is it. THank You!!

Did you do this yet?

on the +12 volt line its says it can give 20 amps, I was assuming it would be able to run the 95w pelt ok. Its just a super cheap 350W PS so I'm not really surprised that it cant handle the 95W pelt. I'm hoping that a 600W one, damm even if its cheap will be able to handle it. I really dont know much about volts and rails, amps and stuff like that. Learning since I've been using the pelt. Also if this PS can handle maybe the 95 and the 55 that would be awsome cause im sure i could stick the 55 on something.. like use it as a beer chiller.

The ps I'm using now is a 350W super flower PS, god what a bad damm, thats so NOT [H]

Not so sure about that. I recently picked up a 170 watt pelt. Off the E-bay. I have an old raid max 420 watt supply that I use for tinkering with components outside of pc. I hooked up the 170 watt pelt to 12 volts and in 4 seconds the hot side almost burned my finger. The funny thing was the power supply with nothing else on it bogged down like mad (both fans at least). It is rated at 12 volts and 13 amps. That said the item your showing might handle a 95 watt pelt but anymore would be pushing it. As for using my current WC setup with the 170 watt pelt and my waterblock I am not sure I could cool the hot side plus the cpu wattage (assuming that will be another 45 watts).

As for using a 220 watt pelt I think that would be way too much. Difficult to cool and would require a big ass power supply. What do people use (wattage wise) for cpu applications. I was thinkin 170 would be ok but now am unsure.
