OK so forgive me ahead of time for this question.

scenario: i have a shuttle xpc with the ICE heatsink/fan and am running on a P4C 3.0GHZ.. I recently decided my temps were too high (50C idle, near 60C underload) so i bought some AS5 and applied as per the instructions on the AS5 website. OK so the problem i had with the isntructions is that there is a bracket on my motherboard for the heatsink that prevents me from wiggling my heatsink at all once it is in contact with the cpu. also, it is tough to get the heatsink down straight on top of the cpu so it ends up coming down on an angle first and then gets pushed flat.

i realise these instances could compromise the application of the thermal paste, thereby eliminating the significance of the application in the first place.

and expectedly, i have noticed that my temperatures are reall not any better than before.

so: how would you recommend i re-apply the paste, if it all?

and: (even more noobie) wtf is with that hole on the heatspreader of my p4 that got totally filled with the old thermal paste and i was way too scared to attempt any way of getting it out?

Those run hot, I am not up on that heatsink. Those numbers are not too far out if its not a high performance HS.

Imo it sounds like you did your research and took all the care you could in the application. You really cant do much more. I would not worry about it. Perhaps if you have the time, reapply it one more time but there is not much you can do about the mounting method. Consider checking the heatsink base for flatness and a lapping job might help some, it costs almost nothing to do. Do a google on "heatsink lapping" if you are not familuar with the procedure. A piece of glass and some wet and dry and an hour is all you need :)

The hole is a vent if I remember right, I saw a post all about it some time ago but cant remember the details. I do remember the same question as yours was asked and the replie(s) were not to worry about it being filled with AS5, its not a problem. Of that part I am certain.
 
The little hole in the heatspreader is a guide for when you are drilling a hole through the processor to make it into a keychain.
