Fellas,

Just started folding for team 33 and got my first WU turned it (343 pts for me). Couple of questions:

1.) I left my PC on 24/7 to get the first WU in as fast as possible (at this point it was only installed on 1 core). After the first WU was turned in I tried installing into my second FAH directory, but they pulled down 2 different WUs to work on. Since I usually only have my PC on for ~4hrs/day, at the rate my first WU was going I will not finish within the 6 day deadline. Is there a way to get both cores to process the same WU?

2.) If there is no way to work on the same WU, does that mean deadlineless units are the only way for me to go?

3.) The client has been having trouble connecting today... I've gotten the message 'cannot connect to work server' message about 15 times today. Any advice?

Welcome!

I'm still very confused about this only 4 hours a day thing.....

The SMP client has all the cores work on the same WU. However the WU are much much larger and have an even tighter deadline. 3 days to be exact.

I'm not sure your going to be able to get stuff in on time with 4 hours a day.

The easy fix:
Leave the computer on.... I'm not even sure where some of the power buttons are on my some of my cases.

4 hours a day is going to cause you problems.
You'll need to give the CPU more time to finish the WU.

Welcome to the team. :)

Yes, there's the SMP client which produces a lot more points, but the deadlines are 4 days...

2.) If there is no way to work on the same WU, does that mean deadlineless units are the only way for me to go?
No, you can select to run small work units which complete a bit faster. Normally the WUs don't have such a tight deadline unless you're running the SMP client.

3.) The client has been having trouble connecting today... I've gotten the message 'cannot connect to work server' message about 15 times today. Any advice?
Server issues happen once in a while at Stanford. No need for worry. :)

Yeah, my desktop needs to be off in order for me to concentrate on work... otherwise I get distracted pretty easily.

Thanks for the heads up about the SMP client, I'd give that a try if the deadlines weren't even tighter :p Perhaps they'll change the deadlines to 6 days once its out of beta.

Ignore the third question, it finally connected after 45 tries or so.

I appreciate the replies, I might OC it a bit to get the WUs cranked out sooner.

Even if you OC it a good amount your not going to see any good numbers unless you let that rig run for longer. Can you let it run while your at work/school or out of the house?

Yep, even a 4GHz machine running the small WUs of a standard client will hardly accomplish any work by running only 4 hrs a day. You got to let it run longer - a lot longer, or you might be better off choosing another DC project.

Sounds like the consensus is to let it run longer. My calculations were based off my first WU: 45 hrs to complete using 1 core.

Rounding up to 48 hrs means that 1 WU would take 8 hrs every day for 6 days and therefore 4 hrs/day with 2 cores (I assumed that 2 cores could work on the same WU in the console version; it scales perfectly; and also that each WU is the same size... which I guess are flaws in my logic).

Thanks again! I'll keep folding albeit slowly.

JUST LEAVE IT ON 24/7/365/LIFESPAN

If you have problems with the computer distracting you, GTFO of the room where it is and go around jumping over a field of grass with butterflies flying around... The sun shining in your face... Alright that's enough of this... You get the idea?

The sun is EVIL.

Thanks for the understanding jon, I was merely trying to find a way for this to work around my schedule.

As a newb, I had no idea it required the pc to be on for such a long time, I thought all I was doing was donating 'excess cpu cycles' but apparently not.

But yeah I 'get the idea' and you're attitude is completely on the mark... 'enough of this'.

Ethugz for life.

You're just running the standard single core client. The work units do not have a deadline of 6 days. They normally have a deadline of about 90 days.

What you are seeing is the result of many of us being spoiled by the SMP client. Before it came out, the regular client was fine. There were times you would get the 600 pointers (which were knocked down to 500 points) and the 364 pointers (which were knocked down to some other lower number) and they would fold for very good PPD. However, the regular gromacs work units basically suck ass for points no matter what you are running them on.

All of the work units I just mentioned should have a deadline of around 90 days. Sometimes it may be shorter than that depending on how long the project has been out and if you are getting a work unit which has been resent due to the server not receiving that work unit back in a timely manner. In those cases the deadline can be shorter.

SMP work units normally don't have a deadline of more than 4 days and it can be less than that if it's a reissued work unit or something like that. In my case, I can crunch anything in well under the deadline as long as my machines are running 24/7. For the most part, only 4 hours a day isn't going to do much. Folding does use spare cycles but if you get caught up in the competition, 4 hours a days isn't going to work.

I have 3 personal dual to quad core machines running folding 24/7/365. It doesn't bother me one bit. Then again, I've been doing this for years and have been keeping my systems on 24/7 long before I started folding.

Welcome to the [H]ardest Team in the World!

We welcome your questions and we welcome your help in fighting the beast and slaying the dragon.

Most everyone here at the DC sub forum is polite and willing to help.

Great to have you folding with us.

:)

Welcome to the [H]orde, Jester1550. If you're running the no-nonsense console client, you will make the deadlines (as SmokeRngs said). If you need the computer off to get some work done, then go ahead and do so. Just make sure that you do get some work done! ;)

There is always the additional 8? hours that you're sleeping... bringing it up to 12hpd, and you'll make the deadlines easily.

We welcome your contribution.
