I'm in the process of putting together a new machine, and was just hoping to get some inputs. Here's what I'm looking to get...

CPU Cooler: Xigmatek HDT-S1283 & Xigmatek Bracket $21 + $8
Motherboard: Asus P5Q Pro $99
Memory: Corsair 4G DDR2-800 $25
Graphics: EVGA 9800GTX $175
DVD Drive: LiteOn SATA DVD Burner $24
Case & PSU Combo: Antec 300 & NeoPower 500 Modular PSU $90


Components I already have...
CPU: QX9650
Hard Drive: Some standard SATA 500G...


The machine will be primarily for workstation use... It will use Virtual PC, and do some video encoding. I don't plan on using it all that much for gaming. So... Did I miss anything? Should I be using different components for anything?

If it's not for games, you could always tone down the card (9800GTX for 175 is way overpriced.. a GTX260 goes for that) to a 9800GT or 9600GT, or even less. Rest seems like standard issue parts:rolleyes:
 
This is a pet peeve of mine, but please don't use after-rebate prices. Regardless of whether or not you end up getting all of your rebate checks, it creates an inaccurate picture (especially for those with a fixed budget looking for parts) since you have to pay the before-rebate prices up front.

Other than that nitpick, the build looks pretty good as a whole. But you could make a few changes, like the HD4850 to save money, the Samsung SH-S223F for a quieter optical drive, and another 4GB kit of RAM to make things easier on you. (If you plan on overclocking, you should pick up some DDR2 1000 RAM instead.)

Though you didn't mention needing one, you may want to consider getting a faster, large capacity hard drive. Two good choices are the Western Digital WD6400AAKS and the Samsung SpinPoint F1 750GB HDD.

You'll also need two 120mm case fans for the front of the Three Hundred case. While you could get some fans from NewEgg, I recommend the Yate Loon D12-series fans (from either Jab-Tech or Petra's Tech Shop).
 
I'd even say it may be wise to go with a 4670. It cuts the cable clutter in that case, and you gain some extra power as it's powered from the bus. If you aren't doing any heavy gaming and possibly doing some sort of render (AutoCAD etc) then I can say a 4670 would fit your needs well.
I'd second tiraides HD selection. The WD6400AAKS is excellent in the value/speed/GB ratio right now, def. worth considering if you want faster loadup times and such.
I'd also go with the OCZ ram HG suggested.

I'd also suggest another DVD burner. The LiteOn ones are very loud and obnoxious.
 
You might as well get a larger drive man. You have a QX9650 you can afford it. LoL
 
okie... so I changed to...

I didn't want to drop too much off the graphics card, since I will minor graphics hacking from time to time. and for just $125 it should last me for the life of the PC.

Regarding the Hard Drive... I think the one I have is this (will have to check for sure when i get home) Seagate Barracuda. Would those hard drives suggested really provide that much performance improvement over the Seagate? If so, I suppose I could always use more disk space, and throw my current drive in as a slave drive :)

For that price point (the 9800) it's almost worth it to get a 4850. They blow away the all the 9 series in almost all aspects for less price. However EVGA doesn't make ATi products ;)

For the HDD, the WD has the highest platter density, making it just as fast as the first and 2nd gen Raptor (10k enthusiast) drives, but not quite on par with the VelociRaptor drives currently out ($1/GB EXPENSIVE drives)
 
Just posted a 9600GT deal for $59.99AR + F/S in the deals section. Just slightly inferior to the 88/98GT.

For hard drives.. if you're not even using up the current capacity then don't bother.
 
Meh...EVGA is a good brand but, $125 is still a bit too much because for $25 more, you can get the HD 4850 for $150$20 MIR) w/free shipping. Other than the EVGA 9800GT, I suggest the MSI Geforce 9800GT O/C edition for $115 ($20 MIR) w/free shipping. It has a factory O/C of 680mhz on the core clock and 1900mhz on the memory clock. EVGA is at default clock speed of 600mhz core and 1800 memory clock. It is overall slower than an HD4850 but, it is also $35 cheaper. So, it's cheaper cost justifies its performance. But, it's performance is pretty decent actually. Take a look.
