Yep..mines is dying too -_-

I have a Zalman ZM-NB32J, I modded it on another board with paperclips so I can get it to fit on this one. However, I also have a XP-90..and there doesn't look to be much clearance.

Anyone have ideas/alternatives? and can anyone tell me if it will actually clear it? Didn't want to take it apart, and find out that someone here knew all along it wouldn't fit. :p

Searching the board and google for this was kind of difficult..but I tried. Maybe I just suck :(
 
Well, i just checked the airflow around the stock heatsink because I figured that since the XP-90 was hanging over it, the fan was probably blowing on it as well. So..there's some air moving on it..but it seems rather warm. So I just unplugged the fan, and now only the air coming out of the heatsink is blowing on it. Now..adding another question, does anyone have their rig like this? and does it work? it's been stable for a couple hours now..but I haven't put it under heavy load yet.
 
chances are that you dont really NEED the fan at all, unless you overvolt and/or overclock alot. i've opened my case before (nf7-s board) and the fan was seized up completely, for who knows how long, and everything was fine (overvolted and overclocked as well)

so if theres any airflow you should be good
 
yeah that's what i'm hoping, i've read plenty of stuff on how northbridges don't actually heat up..

the zalman passive cooler feels more like a decorative item than an actual heatsink, so i guess we'll see if this works out pretty well

i don't do much overclocking..couple hundred megahertz here and there to squeeze wu's out a little faster ;)

but summer is coming :(

put in the zalman passive NB cooler, and bend or remove fins on the NB cooler that interfere with the XP-90. i assume that it is the XP-90's heatpipes that might give you a problem, so just mod the NB sink a bit so that everything clears.

i really don't think that it is a good idea to leave your chipset to heat up.
 
yeah..i just did some checking, it looks like there *might* be a couple millimeters of clearance

might as well do it now before summer gets here

arrghh school =( i don't have time....

stupid abit needs to cut holes in their boards
 
My board runs at 253 fsb and the NB fan has been dead for like 6 months now, works just fine.
 
well i can tell you.. i built around 5 computers for my workplace all using ic7-g motherboards.. of them 4 fans are dead.. and all 4 are just unplugged.. been this way for at least 6 months now.. hasnt caused a problem..
 
i know on my IS7-E, i just took teh NB fan off and run it passive, it never really even heats up, and ive never had a problem with stability.
