My birthday is quickly coming up, and I only just realized it. I figure since I'm off to college sometime soon, I hope at least. I'll go ahead and ask for a new laptop. I have no idea what I want though. I really don't go into the notebook or netbook market, and with all the choices out there I've found it hard to find the best deal. Netbooks look fun at first...but I wonder if the small screen/keyboard will bother me. Though I'll still have my normal desktop with me, so I don't know.

The cheaper the better, 300 and below, 200 and below is ideal, but likely not possible

Doesn't need to play games, but I don't want it to be slow. Maybe able to play a dvd, with firefox and a couple tabs open. Having MS word and some music, basic stuff.

I don't care if it's a netbook, or a notebook. Looks and weight really don't matter. I either want the cheapest, or the best performance for ~300.

There probably really isn't much in the price range, and I'm being a cheapass. But it's what I'm trying for, thanks everyone for the help.

I would suggest a Dell Inspiron 15 its $350 at basic config and should handle of your needs.

Check www.delloutlet.com and hope to stumble on something.

300 bucks doesnt buy much if youre looking for a new machine. A mini 9 could be had (dell outlet) for mid 200's and then you could upgrade as you raise money. I have about 600 or so wrapped up in mine and I love it.

The Dell Inspiron 15 for $350 that It_Shiro listed is pretty good. If you're looking at a Netbook, there's the AcerAspire ones 10" for $300 but, with the 3 cell battery. For $330 you can get the ones with the 6 cell battery for longer life. But, drawback is no DVD drive though.

I bought an ASUS 1000HE netbook for my everyday stuff.......does what it needs to and has a 160GB HDD. It works well. I can't type for shit so the keyboard doesn't bother me in any way.

For 65 dollars I bought an external DVD-ROM (needed one anyway)
For 25 dollars I bought a 2GB hunk o' RAM.

Now I run Windows 7 RC on the thing and it works like a dream.

Thanks everyone for the replies! Delloutlet looks great, however I've got just a feewww more questions.

I think I'm going to end up getting a dell mini 9..or maybe a 10 actually. (It's better, right? :D)

279+ shipping seems a very fair deal, however I've noticed that the prices are very spread out. Even when they have the same specs, some are 40-50 dollars more. Both refurbished, and same specs as far as I can tell. Why are they a different price? Are the slightly more expensive ones in better condition, less wear and tear? Can anyone vouche for the quality of these refurbished laptops? Or is there a better deal than the dell mini 10, for about 300. As far as I can tell it's the best.
