I'm sure this has been gone over a million times by now.. so I apoligize first off.

I'm looking to get a decent set of headphones for my pc at home. Right now, I'm plugging my optical output into my home audio receiver, and I run my headphones off that. I'm looking in the CAD100-200 range + tax, and would like something thats good for gaming, and all sorts of music. My home theater system already sounds great ($2500+ invested so far), but the 50 plantronics arent quite cutting it for when everyone in the house is asleep and I want good audio. I've been looking at the HD500s and the HD570s today.. and am wondering if anyone can suggest something else, or if the 570s (which I'm leaning towards) are a good buy. I'm in canada, and would prefer to buy locally, so thats one of the reasons im looking at the HD570s (can get them at a local futureshop for $199). I don't plan on buying a headphone amp anytime soon (hoping the headphone out on the receiver will do)... and the other option I've seen is the A900s, but I dont know of anywhere locally that sells them.

Both the HD500's and the HD570's leak a fair amount of sound towards the exterior, so that they may not be optimal (or even appropriate) if you're going to use headphones when everybody else is asleep in nearby rooms. Moreover, both the HD500's and the HD570's are considerably overpriced for the sound quality that's coming out of them, even at their discounted prices.
 
If you wanna save some money , look at the HD 497's, or if you can spend some more, try for the HD 580. Supposedly the 570's are not all that good.

You need a bit more power to drive them, but the sound is considerably more balanced than the HD570 IMO.
Amazon stocks them for about $170 US but they are definitely worth it.
The reciever headphone jack is unlikely to be the best output in the world unless it's a damn good reciever.
 
The Sennheiser HD497 headphones are being sold at NCIX for 109 dollars. I am ordering a pair tonight.
 
the A500's are 115 US$ shipped from audiocubes.com if you don't mind ordering online, the a900's are around 215 us shipped. unfortunately audiocubes is the only place to get the 500 or 900's. So you are forced to order online, but they are great cans and you should consider either of them.
 
If you want good music quality do not get the HD570's. They are good for gaming, but that's it. I just got my pair of 580's in and WOW. They are so much better than the 570s in every way. When I got the 570's I thought they were great. And they are, next to the very low end sonys I was used to. With $2500+ invested in your system so far, get the best phones you can find. I found my 580s for $135 on EBay, while I got the 570's for $65.
