 ... :(

Hello again |-|.4/>D guys and gals.
I'll welcome myself back.

I have a mini server set up running win2k and one of my main drives crashed
STRANGELY today... 80G WD ( don't laugh... I know... 80G in my "server" )

Showed no signs of failure, quick as ever and I've treated it good.

"the story"
I plugged a random HD into the machine, browsed it a little, realized it wasn't
the one I thought, shut down and took it out. When I started the machine up again
my 80G is doing the whole "would you like to format now" routine, so I check it out
in disk management, admin tools, and it's partitioned?! ... a random 10.2G partition
and then 64.51G unallocated space. pardon my lang but WTF?! I'm stumped.

I vaugly remember having this problem before but I can't remember how or even
IF I fixed it. It's more important to me now, I have a serious collection of mp3s
on that drive that i've been building (cataloged just perfect) for the past 5 or 6 years.

It's got to be something simple... it CAN'T be hardware failure. I think it's related to
me plugging in that drive... can the header get screwed up or something? I don't know if that makes sense but whatever... help.. please...

Any advice is GREATLY appriciated.

I've done the data recovery thing for other people so I know how much it sucks.
GOD is there anything else I can do?! Am I stupid, is there something wrong here
that is simple to fix?!

Thanks again.

Rex

I'm not sure how to fix your currect situation, but you say this happened again? How many times has this happenend before? What kind of power supply do you have?

Also, just to let you know, please do not double sig (Rule #25). ;)

yeah SIMILAR problem before but with a different drive
and what are you talking about double sig?!

So what was the problem before? What are you system specs?

Again, I don't know how to recover your data now. Sorry.

Well, your name is at the top of the post and then you write it at the bottom of the paragraph. Double sig ;)

well alrighty...

thanks for bumping the thread, protias.

is there anyone that CAN help?!

give me some direction?

please guys.

2 Different HD's on the same motherboard and Power supply? What kind of power supply are you using? Might be dirty/fluctuating power killing your drives.

And protias was wrong on double sigs. It's when you have a signature (see your control panel to enable/disable them), but at the end of your post you still write your name as if you were writing a letter to someone. Sigs are meant for witty quotes or system specs. Look at mine, system specs. Double sig is just adding your name, even though you already have a signature reserved for your name. Pretty anal but what can you do.

(this is a double sig)

It could very well be powersupply issues, I have no idea what the specs are for the PS in
that machine! The sticker that tells you all about it isn't on there, I pulled it out and everything. ? I will not continue using that powersupply.

I've been on this all day.
Here are some more important facts about my problem.

The drive spins up fine. BIOS recognises it fine.
Windows sees it as an 80G but it's showing up as unallocated space.
I've plugged it into another machine and I get the same problem.
When I plugged it into my main comp, xp did scandisk and I was hopefull
because it was doing all types of stuff... now i'm worried It may have been
screwed up more by that.

the other drive that died was a totally seperate thing, 40G WD I've had through 4 or 5 computers. Funny thing is I still use that drive as a primary on another machine with no
problems. It gives me a *thoink thoink* when it spins up, but that's all. When that one dies, it's not going to be a big deal though, data is on a 120G in that machine.

P.S. maybe you guys should see rule number 3,
don't hijack my thread and make it about double sigs!!
j/k :D

Using "GetDataBack NTFS 3.03" I could see all the old folders after a 45min scan.
I've done the restore "copy paste" method that the prog. uses and VOiLA...

sike, it looks like it's restored and it's taking up 65G of space on my other drive
but all of the mp3s are corrupt, not a single one will play. Winamp doesn't know how
to handle them media player doesn't either. They're appropriate size 4.5M etc...
what now?! Bad sectors or something like that wouldn't corrupt every single one?

I finally recovered the files using the program mentioned above.
I did the scan again and copied the files over in small chunks.

Thanks for all your help.
