Another Build Thread - $2k budget

Been about 5 years since my last build. I use allot of Office Programs, Folding and I play allot of TF2 but I'd like to get into newer games as well. Wife uses the PC for surfing.

I'll be going from my full tower to a 19" mid tower so I can get it into my desk bay. Will go from air cooling to water to assist with temp. I'd like to have a clean case being that I've been using a solid obsidian case that I haven't modded.

Here is my lineup. As you see from my signature I haven't moved from Sandy and frankly my OC has gone away as I've hit my 40's. Using a mild OC on the 2500k now just to keep it relevant. The 970 is fine at stock for TF2 and frankly my CPU is the bottleneck.

Here is my 1st run at the new rig. I truly want an x99 build over a z170 for some reason. Seen so much back and forth its a coin toss. I do like the idea of more CPU cores as well as SLI at 16x.

Build time is 4-5 months from now. Getting new carpets for the house and then teh build. Also gives me some time to see how the MoBo I listed has performed and which memory works well with it. The MoBo looks overkill but I do like the idea of the armor type plating for support as well as the fixed IO shield and wifi/BT integration.

I'll poach my PSU from my current rig as well as a platter drive I use for my Steam games. I'll replace the PSU in my current rig with a Corsair 750 I have laying around. Old rig will be given to my 5 year old.

The 1080 will be replaced with a 1070 G1 once they become available. I will sli in two years is my guess.

4k not an issue but will be a nice to have in the next few years.

New stuff comes along all the time. I'm not waiting for Cannonlake. I assume allot will change. Will the x99 have upgrade possibilities coming up or is this the last crop of chips that will fit. If so, I can always get a better chip later as prices drop. I'd like to have the ability to future proof if possible in this build.

Let me hear the feedback. I do see that Asus is releasing a ROG/STRIX mobo that is about half of the Rampage 10.

I don't like it when people spend over $500 on a motherboard. I feel like they're just throwing their money into a garbage can, because there is no higher build quality or improved feature set.

You're already castrating it with that cheap 5820k. The fourth PCIe slot on that mammoth is unusable with it:

4 x PCIe 3.0 x16 slots (supports x16, x16/x16, x16/x8/x8, x16/x8/x8/x8 or x8/x8/x8/x8 mode with 40-LANE CPU; x16, x16/x8 or x8/x8/x8 mode with 28-LANE CPU

So yeah, really anything over $250 is just throwing your money down a deep dark hole. They ALL support 2-way SLI and overclock and USB 3.1 and other niceties.

I didn't see much more for the money using a 6800 instead. After those 2 cpu''s your $600 and higher. I can always drop one of the higher clocks in once prices drop.

That mobo has terrible reviews. I liked the Asus because the build quality looks great and I like the idea of a sound bay as well as the take on wifi/bt.

Still would wait until the reviews start rolling in.

Okay, you want an x99 motherboard with good reviews and low price, you're not going to get Asus. But that's not such a bad thing.

Four four-star rated motherboards from three different brands under $250. Proof that there's no loss in quality, and Asus is just dropping the ball here. Consider it a growth opportunity? :D

Also, adding wifi and Bluetooth to a system costs ten bucks if you don't care who makes it, or twenty five if you demand Intel ac. It's really one of those hideously marked-up features on motherboards.

And now that they're transitioning to m.2 for Wifi, we can get these installed without getting a mini pcie adapter.
