So, I've reinstalled an 8800 Ultra I had sitting around for a couple of years into my HTPC after some Dremel'ing (it didn't fit before so I bought a 8800GT) as I've had very odd issues with FPS and video playback with VLC lately. Or at least, that was the plan.

Turned the computer off, popped in new(old) card, had to find another PCIe power cable because the 8800GT only needed one, cleared the CMOS and booted up. POST looked fine, but got a black screen (no cursor) after POST. Huh, odd. Fiddled around in BIOS.. no settings that seemed like they'd matter. I used this card on this board before moving everything from a Lian-Li into the HTPC so there shouldn't be any compatibility issues. Tried a boot from the Windows 7 CD.. same thing. Get to "Boot from CD.." option, hit a key, then black screen and nothing. Popped the original 8800GT back in - no issues.

What the hell am I missing? It seems odd that POST is good to go but nothing else is.
 
So it doesn't boot with the Ultra but does with the GT?

What PSU do you have?
 
Corsair HX520W. I figured if the PSU was insufficient, I wouldn't get any video at all? I don't know that that's true but that was my assumption.
 
Weird things can happen with an insufficient PSU. However in this case, the 520HX should be enough for the 8800GTX.

You didn't answer my question though. Also, did you try the 8800Ultra in another PC?
 
Yes, the machine boots with the 8800GT. I also checked both PCIe power plugs in the 8800GT, no issues with either.

Unfortunately, I can't test the 8800Ultra in anything else as this is the only desktop that will take a PCIe card in my house currently. Everything else is a laptop.

Well unfortunately, not much else you can do besides trying a different PSU. But more than likely that GTX is defective.
