So, a friend of mine and I are both upgrading, and we both want to use our existing power supplies if possible. Here are the proposed specs:

Me:
- PS: Antec 430W TruePower + 20-->24 pin adapter. 20A on 12V rail.
- MB: Asus P5B
- Memory: 2x1GB Corsair DDR2 800
- CPU: C2D E6600
- Video: BFG 7600GT
- Hard disks: WD3200JD, WD2000JB, IBM 75GXP
- 2x optical / floppy / misc junk

Him:
- PS: Antec 430W TruePower + 20-->24 pin adapter. I'm guessing 20A on 12V rail but am not sure.
- Memory: 2x1GB Corsair DDR2 800
- MB: Asus P5B
- CPU: C2D E6400
- Video: BFG 7900GT
- Hard disks: 2x WD800JB
- 2x optical / floppy / misc junk

My current setup:
- PS: Antec 430W TruePower. 20A on 12V rail.
- Memory: 4x512GB Corsair DDR
- MB: Asus P4P800
- CPU: P4 Northwood 2.4 @ 2.9
- Video: BFG 6800GT
- Hard disks: WD3200JD, WD2000JB, IBM 75GXP
- 2x optical / floppy / misc junk

The motivation for this thread is the question: Do I need a new PSU or is the one powering my current setup fine? My inclination is that it's good enough, since the C2D uses about the same power as a Northwood P4, and a 7600GT should be even less than the 6800GT. But, I'm guessing there's not much headroom left? My friend's proposed machine is likely closer to being maxed out than mine.

Great, that was exactly what I was looking for. That link is even up-to-date with all the latest things. Sorry I must not have run across it in the search. :) The answer, in case any one cares, is that we both seem to be OK with these setups, but it's going to be fairly close (60W to spare) and if we ever upgrade the video cards further it will definitely be time for a new PSU.

Those are pretty decent psu's, if a little light for what you want to use them for... If you start to have flakeyness I'd think about replacing them... Otherwise, my experiences would suggest that your ok...

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll keep in mind that the calculator is not that useful as a tool. I think we'll both try running the new systems with our existing PSUs, but if problems arise (e.g. prime95 + rthdribl) then we'll know where to look :)

What Dave said.....

Except for the "scrap" part. I'm pretty sure he meant "scrape."

Hmm, we now have two votes for "both should work, though it'll be close" and two votes for "Matt's OK, but Matt's friend needs a new one," including an extra important vote from jonnyGURU. I'll pass on the new information. Thanks again!

Well... now looking at the first and second build, I'll stick with what I said, but the third build concerns me. Northwood uses more power than a C2D, a 6800GT uses more juice than a 7900 and you have three hard drives!!! ;)
