Another Arctic Silver 5 question.

I am going to attempt my first computer build this week and have a quick question. Yes... it is naturally about the arctic silver 5 compound. So straight from the how to on the AS5 site:


"Since the vast majority of the heat from the core travels directly through the heat spreader, it is more important to have a good interface directly above the actual CPU core than it is to have the heat spreader covered with compound from corner to corner."

The "vast majority of the heat", so possibly a little goes all the way to the sides and corners of the heat spreader?....Or am i on some illegal drug? Why not just cover the whole top of it with the AS5 and still keep the "good interface directly above the CPU core"? Would it hurt to? I just feel like the quarter sized application isn't sufficient. It would just make me sleep better at night if i knew the whole top of the chip had protection. I don't want to wake up from a nightmare with a cool sweat thinking something happened to my new conroe processor (Is this also abnormal to think about when waking up?) Any other tips would be appreciated also :rolleyes:
 
Yep, a pea-sized drop spread thinly entirely covers the CPU core. Hard to believe but when you start spreading it.. you'll see.

cant they make the heat spreaders out of copper , this will probably help by five percent itself.
 
The heatspreaders ARE made out of copper (nickel-plated copper, that is). Try lapping a heatspreader, and you'll soon see the copper underneath the nickel plating.
