Another 980?

A while back my good 'ol graphics card died on me and I ended up grabbing a 980 Strix.

I currently run my system with an Asus Swift monitor since it's launch.

So I was wondering what kind of GPU setup you guys run with this monitor?

I prefer to run the monitor at 120Hz with ULMB and I guess it works fine with my 980 Strix but could I see any benifit of grabbing another 980 later this year(?) or should I just stay with my usual 2-3 year period of graphics cards and eventually swap it out for another single-GPU solution?

I generally try to avoid SLI but will I get a better experience with another 980 running the monitor at 120Hz ULMB? I play any games really and I don't mind placebo horse power (unless it's 100% useless).

It's really up to what you consider enough. I'm sure one 980 will be sufficient to play anything that comes out in the next 2-3 years, on high, at 1440p. If you feel like your experience would be better with a higher frame rate, a second 980 is not a bad idea.

I have a 980 Ti paired with a 1440p 144Hz monitor and there's no way I can get a consistent 100+ fps for ULMB in a lot of games unless I dial back the settings quite a bit. With a 980 you'd have to lower settings even more so unless you either 1. Play non demanding games or 2. Don't mind lowering the settings to medium/low, you should really get a 2nd 980 for the best experience at 120Hz ULMB.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. If I would play something like GTA I would for sure need another 980 but if I'm playing a semi-demanding MMO it's arguable because of optimization and what not. There are a few games that put me at around the 70-90fps range which is obviously playable but I bet another 980 would be a solid pickup to make the most out of the monitor. I'm not completely sold on G-Sync really - I bought the monitor for 1440 with high refresh rate which was non-existent until the Swift monitor, unless you decided to go for an OCd korean monitor which is not the first choice for me.

Now that I think about it, the upcomming 980 Ti Lightning seems kinda appealing to me. I'm looking into a building a second computer it might be an option to bring my GTX 980 Strix over to the 2nd computer and grab the Lightning if it delivers and just stay with a more appealing single-card solution.

I want to make most out of my SWIFT and my 5960x while they're still hot and not have a funky upgrade path.
