howdy. just built an AM2 system based on the 3800+ X2 in a gigabyte M59SLI-S5 with a Zalman 9500. getting some temps that are higher than i would have expected. idles around 38-40c, up in the mid-high 40's during gaming, and hit 51 during two instances of prime95. i have not overclocked it (yet), so everything is at stock. using arctic silver 5, thinking maybe i put too much or didn't apply correctly? any suggestions from those smarter than me? thanks!

Actually thats right ...... Before I lapped, thats what I was doing temp wise. I was idling at 38C and under load it was 48-50C on average. Sometimes it would peak to 54-55C under intense load that would keep both cores pegged at max for a long period of time.

Now that I lapped, I Idle at 36-37C, and under intense load, I hit 45C.

Well, I have an AM2 X2 3800+, and it idles at 24C and goes up to 34C under load.
And that's with the stock cooler. Something wrong with this? Seems rather low. Think the temperature monitor might be b0rked.
My case has good cooling, though.

The sensor may be jacked, or the program could be off. I'd look and see what SpeedFan says. Also, if this is colder than ambient, then thats not possible unless you have a badass peltier/Phase Change system.

What's your ambient temperature? Assume it's 20'c... There's literally no way that your processor can be 4'c over ambient during idle w/o water cooling... I manage to get a delta T of 5'c on water... But it was quite tough. If you can you're VERY lucky :p I'd add at least 5-10'c to your temp to get the real reading.

As for the OP, how'd you apply the TIM (as5)? Try reseating, that's a BIT high for an ambient temp of about... 20-24'c. If you're in a 26'c room then your temps are right on.

ambient is currently around 23c. applied AS5 in the following manner: pea-sized amount, spread around evenly with my finger in a plastic bag. will try reseating. i have been measuring with speedfan. thank you all for your help, i'll let you know how it turns out.

Pea? or Rice? lol, there's a difference there! (unless the peas in your country are smaller than the fat-ass peas in mine).

reset with a slightly smaller amount of as5. let the heatsink pressure do the spreading this time. interestingly enough, my BIOS is reporting 31-33c just idling. speedfan wrong? hmmm. i was reading the "CORE" readout on speedfan, for the record.

is it possible that Temp3, reading a respectable 29c, is actually my CPU temp and Core is...well wrong?

also, the "L" shaped clip used to secure the Zalman touches my chipset heatsink. would that have any effect? i am going to run prime95 for a little while then reboot into bios to see what it says.

31-33 is right on for idling. Your temps will go up alot under full load, probably up to at least 46 on stock cooling.

You could pry off the IHS that would give you a couple degrees.

update:
Reset the heatsink with a rice-grain of AS5, letting the heatsink pressure distribute. re-oriented the clip so it isn't touching the chipset heatsink. going to let prime95 run all night with speedfan graphing the temperature. then we'll see whats going on. since the ambient temp will plummet throughout the night, the graph will show much much of a factor it is in my particular case.

You don't have the heatpipe cooler, do you? (I heard some people got heat pipes, I didn't :()
Mine is at 49C under load in a cool room.

For me, the "Core" reading I think is the video chipset. Not exactly sure. But I do know it is not CPU. CPU temp for me is "Temp1". I know this, because when I am idle it is down below 40C, then under load it is almost 50C.

Core ISNT GPU temp.......I know because I have a 7950 that idles at 57C!!! If my CPU got that hot I'd be grabbin ice and a fire extinguisher!!!!!! :D Core isnt reading GPU, by any streach of the imagination.

I said Video Chipset. I have onboard graphics. When I take my fan off the chipset heatsink, Core temp goes up.
