Seriously guys, being a member of Anonymous doesn't pay. They get busted every time they hack something and, with sentences like these, it just doesn't make any sense ruining your life trying to be "cool."

Anonymous hacker Jeremy Hammond knew that he was going to serve serious time for his role in the 2011 hack of Stratfor Global Intelligence. But holy crap, the judge threw the book at the guy! The 28-year-old Chicago native was just sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. For hacking.

"Ten years is a pretty intense sentence, one that Hammond says is nothing but a "vengeful, spiteful act" designed to discourage more politically motivated hacking. "

Oh freakin' WHAAAA.

i believe what he says is true that the sentence is to discourage people.

On one hand he said it was just harmless civil disobedience*, and on the other he was writing his intent was "to destroy the target, hoping for bankruptcy, collapse."

*like his AZ hack which shut down the sex offender registry, Amber Alert system and fingerprinting system, just really harmless stuff. y so srs?

Lol, murder used to net you around 6 years, before mandatory minimums... unless (let's not soapbox this). Now he'll be someones sex pillow.
ftfy

I would also point out that he used a bunch of stolen credit card numbers to make "donations" to charities costing them lots of money in chargebacks.

jesus..bunch of fucking brown shirts in here

the stuff he broke free needed to be seen.. this kid is a hero imho.

stratfor is a criminal tool of the dictatorship .. THEY are the true criminals here..

Does that include people's credit card numbers? The man committed hundreds of thousands of dollars in credit card fraud.

no.. guess he does fail, the cc fraud is unacceptable.

but the stratfor break in..awesome sauce.

failed hero.

Yeeessss, and they are going to have you in leg irons any minute now.

Ruuunnnn FOOORRRESSSSTTTT !

The sentence is because he has a prior conviction for hacking. The last time, he hacked into a private website that supported conservative causes and stole credit card numbers. You do not have the right to hack into someone else's website, vandalize their stuff and steal money from donors simply because you disagree with them. That time, they cut him slack.

I would also remind you that he has numerous non-hacking related criminal convictions as well.

He has demonstrated a remarkable and continued lack of respect for private property as well as people who have political opinions that differ from his. It is very rare that I agree with the feds on anything but ten years is an appropriate sentence.

Repeat offenders for DUIs, rape and manslaughter still don't usually get as much of a sentence.

I support this sentence. :) Crucify him next time. I've had too many headaches from trying to fix computers corrupted and infected by malware written by guys like him. They're a plague on all normal IT people, making our jobs much harder than they have to be.

Then that's a case of injustice that should be remedied, apart from the DUIs.

You've never lost a friend or relative to a drunk driver, have you? If you had, you would likely put them in with the rapists and murderers.

10 years for hacking, I agree with the above posts, murders have gotten less time.

Classic abuse of power in a corrupt system that never worked. They just don't like that people out there are smarter than they are and expose them.

I want to see a conviction of a serial murder or rapist that served less than 10 years in the modern american legal system.

In general, DUIs, rapes and manslaughters aren't federal crimes and are prosecuted at the state level. I assure you that if you were prosecuted at the federal level for rape, the sentence would be worse than 10 years. For example, the federal sentence for rape is anything up to life (see : http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/2242).

Nope, and you've never had X or Y happen to you or someone you care about, so your opinion on X or Y is lesser than mine.

After reading Stratfor's emails: https://search.wikileaks.org/gifiles/?rl

I think Hammond was completely justified in his actions.

Does that include stealing money from charities? Who do you think has to pay for all of those chargebacks?

I might be more sympathetic if all he did was take information. But he didn't. For the second time, he stole credit card numbers and proceeded to engage in credit card fraud. The first time he did this, he got reduced prison time and they went easy on him. Not even two years after getting out of prison for the first round of credit card fraud, he is back doing it again. That is why he got a ten year sentence this time around.

Add that to a constant disregard for people with opposing views and violent tendencies (he has numerous arrests for violent crimes including one where he stormed a restraint and hurt innocent people and disrupted their meals because one of the patrons happened to be David Irving) as well as the lack of any remorse for his actions and it is easy to see why he got a ten year sentence.

Will be glad to supply weapons to both sides if India and Pakistan want a cage match. India gets the net and trident and the pakistanis get the shield and short sword. Kamran can instruct in Klingon

And you get 3 years for murdering two children.

Their should be a cap of 2 years on hacking charges, but prison for non violent crimes is a retarded idea by itself.

Stratfor is not a weapons dealer, they are an information broker (and from what I've been told, not a very good one at that). They are not in a position to supply weapons to anyone. The fact that they are referring to instructions in Klingon should be a telltale sign that this e-mail is the type intraoffice banter that goes on at any company between its employees.

Didn't this guy also steal credit card information and run up a few hundred thousand bucks (700K) worth of charges and hack in and mess with pensions or something?

Seems like a decent sentence

The judge's husband's law firm was a client of Stratford and a victim of this hack. I wonder if that had anything to do with this sentence.
