In a response to a NATO communiqué, the hactivist group Anonymous laid down the gauntlet telling NATO in no certain terms not to mess with them. In the beginning, Anonymous was making a social statement and was tolerated, but the group is now going way beyond the pale.

Anonymous hit back today though in a mixed statement to NATO which both seemed to be strong but also aligning itself with the idea that they do not seek to harm individual countries or their way of life.

And now, the juvenile, basement dwelling, idiots, that would never stand up to anyone, for anything when not behind a keyboard, have gone and just about insured that NATO countries try something unpleasant with the internet that us regular, honest people will surely regret. :(

Gee, thanks guys.

Did you seriously just compare the Jewish resistance to the Nazi regime to a bunch of script kiddies with nothing better to do that fuck with other people's shit?

Buddy you got nothin' on the sheep. At least they know what side of the fence they are on.

I'm not sure if you have anything to back up your claims, to be honest. If I could hazard a guess, you don't even know who's behind what operations, but have been happily slurping down the media cool-aid.

I'm sorry but I seem to have missed the part where I made any claims.

I am a little thirsty though. Got any sugar?

Yeah, these hippies are playing with fire. Transparency is great and all that but there is a need for secrecy in a lot of things. National security trumps your need to know. And I do find it funny that a bunch of hippy activists are challengine NATO. They may find out theyre not as anonymous as they think. You get the US, UK and a couple other countries looking for you, you will be found. Usually doesnt end well for you either. Hacker vs tank. I know who my money is on.

Once again, for all the moron's who keep calling these people script kiddies and such - they are not acting as such at all. Dur hurrrrr taking down sites hur dur. Not so much. Take a look at the link image above from Anonymous. They aren't even making threats you retards... They are simply defending themselves from the quoted accusations from NATO.

And once again "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter".

Ok, I don't even know where to start with this fail-ness. The French resistance wasn't fighting against the Genocide per se but was fighting the "conquering" Germans. They were fighting for their freedom. That some ended up helping Jews escape Genocide was a natural progression. The fact of the matter was that were plenty of people who were fine with the status quo of the Germans being in power and didn't want the hassle of "Le Resistance" to create problems for them. OP was addressing the parallels with those indifferent people who would rather sit on the sidelines than a Nazi vs Jews struggle.

This discussion shouldn't be defined as NATO = Nazi and Anon = Freedom fighters. The idea that the OP presented, though I am not sure I agree with him, certainly doesn't warrant the type of immediate "Genocide bad, and can't be compared to anything, mkay" reaction that you presented.

Yes, because governments never attempt to suppress negative attitudes towards them or censor anyone's speech. It was clearly anonymous that sparked said motivation.

First off, LOL at the name-calling going on here. Everyone seems to think that anyone with a different take on the situation is either a "moron" or "sheep." People are so quick to jump to extremes that it just takes all the meaning away from those words.

I agree with you that a.) these guys are not script kiddies to be dismissed b.) there is more to this story.

If you look at the revolutionary war, we the people of America were the terrorists and the British were the establishment that was railing against it.

Indeed, the discourse of America at this moment seems to be this in a nutshell. Label, forget the point the person was trying to make, tell yourself how wonderful you are, and move on. For anyone to believe that these "kids" are just script kiddies at this point, makes no sense. At the very least, the fact that they have been able to do what they say they are going to do is something that one should be aware of.

The difference being that 'Anonymous' is a fringe group of the whole world interwebs user base causing a massive amount of noise and going to ruin shit for the normal folks out there because of ego. Thats all there is to it. They arent fighting for the rights of the average internet user, those who actually think they are must be more blind than the 'sheeple' they claim dont understand.

Ruin shit in what way? What specific "shit" will be ruined for you by what Anonymous is doing? Are you perhaps afraid of the gubment taking away your rights? Freedom infringement can be stopped...Not by Anonymous or any other organization, but by we the people. It's that simple. Just because people don't exercise their rights and support people and groups as much as they should (EFF/etc). People are always quick to label "those fatties in their mom's basements" but at least they are doing something rather than sitting on the sidelines. Do I like what they are doing? No. Do I agree with it? No. Do I think that our founding fathers finally got sick of taxation without representation and did something about it? Absolutely. History will be the only judge of the outcome of this, whether they are an anecdote to be forgotten, or if they actually contributed something useful in the long run.

I agree. To be doing what they are takes commitment to a cause. If they really were just "script kiddies" like so many security experts here are quick to claim, then they would not be going after such publicity with open letters to government bodies unless they were COMPLETELY ignorant of the fact that they can be hunted and made public examples of as a consequence.

I think he said "franc" possibly in ref to the French currency and the French Resistance not the Jewish Resistance.

FUCK NATO. We don't need an assembly to tell us who to fight and whose arse to kiss. We are in 5 GODDAMN wars already, we are not the World Police.
I don't want to sound like a John Bircher ([ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Birch_Society"]John Birch Society - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:John_Birch_Society.png" class="image"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/75/John_Birch_Society.png/160px-John_Birch_Society.png"@@AMEPARAM@@en/thumb/7/75/John_Birch_Society.png/160px-John_Birch_Society.png[/ame]) but seriously, why do we give a damn what NATO wants? So they are under attack from Anon, who gives a rats ass? All we get out of our NATO membership is more fucking wars and orders to kill more people.
FUCK NATO.

This is the Anon message if it works, if not dont blame me.

Okay I'll concede "script kiddie" wasn't the best choice of words. There is some obvious talent within the ranks of these groups. The rest still stands.

These are not freedom fighters. They have done nothing toward the goal of restoring any freedom lost of right revoked. The comparisons to revolutionaries are not at all relevant. To compare the disruption of private networks to some type of government rebellion is rediculous.

And just for the record I too think NATO can suck it. We need to worry a lot more about problems at home and stay out of everyone else's business unless it's a DIRECT threat to us or our ACTUAL allies that have shown to have our back.

Except the resistance fighters, or mob, are worse in their own way than the so called Nazi's in this case. Sheep indeed. Go with the rest of your herd and baa to your Anon shepherd.

Even attempting to compare the likes of those that attacked Sony's customers, to people fighting for their very lives is silly at best. The ideals of the parties involved is so very different.

Comparing Nazi's to NATO is still not even close enough to be considered in the same park.

What is Anon fighting for again? Are they really fighting for anything at all? Or are they just an unruly mob that attacks this and that simply because they can?

Not that NATO is an organization that I put much faith in. As a US citizen that has been paying the more than his fair share of tax dollars into that, not so needed anymore, organization, I would be perfectly fine with it's slow and careful dissolution.

Now that world governments have the perfect reason to institute all the crap they want to do to the internet for "security" reasons.

Yep,..... go hackers!

Guess on the plus side, places of import will finally give a crap about maintaining secure networks. before somebody with real resources can do real damage. The rest of us will just have to learn to play by their "rules". Oh, and guess who gets to pay for all this....:D

So let me get this straight. They are attacking NATO's public websites which are basically PR crap. I'm trying to get how much of an effect if anything this will have on NATO? Everything that NATO depends on should be on CRONOS (SIPRnet equivalent) which these idiots will never get access to, hopefully. Afterall, they don't need another Bradley Manning idiot equivalent over there.

While I think that the statement by Anonymous was a little over the top the basic premise of what they are saying is true. The goverment exists to serve the will of the people and when a government hides things from the people it is generally one of two reasons A. because the information needs to be hidden from other govenments (I.E things like military intelligence) or B. Because the goverment is doing somthing that is not in line with the will of the people (For example the tuskegee experiments).

in the first case I am fine with goverments keeping a secret but in the second im not.

Unfortunatley the reality is we can never trust our government to expose secrets like the tuskegee experiments on it's own. the only way that secrets like that ever come to the surface is if someone on the inside blows the whistle or if some outside group make an effort (Usually an illegal effort) to expose the truth.

All that being said I fail to see how stealing credit card info and bringing down the play station network really accomplished the task of serving the greater good. Im not saying sony's business practices are the best but I think you would be hard pressed to make a case for them being evil. so far Anonymous has shown us that they have the chops to pull of some high profile hacking but I have yet to see them outing any secret evils or fighting anything other than corporate greed which is honestly just a natural part of free market capitalism.

I mean if Anonymous really wants to do some good hack some predator drones and send them over to pay a visit to some of these guys.

http://www.parade.com/articles/editions/2006/edition_01-22-2006/Dictators_11_to_20

Or maybe hack expirian and equifax and reset everyones credit scores.

Godwin's law invoked in the 3rd post of a thread, that really ought to be a new record at [H].

Anonymous is getting tiresome. Really what you have is a couple people in there who know what they are doing and thousands of tools who blindly follow the couple people because those couple of hackers are the only people on Earth who give a shit about the dweebs if only to have them complete menial tasks.

How do they know this is from Anonymous (the group) as opposed to a single person or two simply doing it... just because they felt like it... could be a lot of Anonymous "members" agree with NATO, and disagree with this, but there's no way to tell simply due to the nature of idea.

Ironically the first I ever heard of Anonymous was watching an online broadcast on Al-Jazeera back when the Egyptian protests were going on. I saw some video of some douche with a Guy Fawkes mask talking with a voice-manipulator thing threatening governments and all that. When I saw it, I said to myself "Oh fucking Christ..." and proceeded to place palm firmly on my forehead.

I didn't think much would come of it. I didn't know the whole Playstation thing would happen, but then again I never would have trusted Sony with my personal info in the first place. This whole thing hasn't affected me at all, except a game I play regulary (Heroes of Newerth) got hacked a couple weeks ago, and then again recently. It's a nuicanse.

Anyway, to the hackers out there.. if you want to protest the government, then go out in the streets and do it. There were massive protests against the Iraq War and the Republicans in 2003 and 2004 in the U.S. Many folks were arrested and the rest were ridiculed by big news outlets. But hey, they had the courage to go out and have their voices heard. The protesters in the Mideast also have a lot of balls, they actually get beaten and shot for speaking their voices. This is admirable.

What's not admirable is sitting behind a computer and hacking video games like a little douche. There is no point being made, and no respect worth being given. This is the first time I've personally commented on this hacking phenomenon. I think it's really low and stupid thing to do and accomplishes nothing. Besides, the most likely outcome is a bunch of pasty nerds are going to be serving hard time, and I think they wouldn't fair well at all in a real jail or prison. It happened to 3 hackers in Spain, apparently.

You had me until you "go out in the streets." I don't understand this mentality. If we are in the digital millennium why not do it digitally? I haven't seen them do anything profound and useful yet, but maybe they actually will? You have seen what has happened to protesters when they "go out in the streets." Why not do something on the web, where they have at least shown that they can do something? Stop wasting time on Sony is my only .02. Do something profound...Do something useful...Do something that makes a difference...That would be my only beef. If they are about freedoms and rights and blah blah blah, prove it.

You make it sound like you want the basement dwelling idiots to just out into the streets, and start a fist fight? I know Anonymous isn't exactly the most popular group of people on the net, but they're fighting a good cause. Considering that they're doing this behind a computer, is about as peaceful a protest can get.

You'd rather people have riots like the Europeans do for soccer? BTW, these idiots were able to take down Sony's networks, as if they're IT staff were a bunch of monkeys.
