So, I've been having a problem with my PC crashing on me lately. It usually only crashes when I'm playing a game but I've also had it crash when I'm using remote desktop and once it happened when the machine was completely idle and I was out of the room.
Usually what happens when the system crashes is that everything just freezes and I have to shut the machine off and restart.. The picture freezes and whatever sound was playing is looped into a horrible screeching sound. Sometimes I get a BSOD, but usually I dont even get that. When I do get the BSOD, it says theres a problem with some recently installed hardware, or it says theres a problem with my nvidia drivers for my graphics card. I have the latest nvidia drivers and all the latest drivers for all of my components.
I recently upgraded my video card from a radeon 9600xt to a 6800nu and thats when I noticed the problem get exponentially worse. Before, it only happened when I played Doom 3, but I havent played that for a while so I pretty much forgot about the problem. Now that I have a new graphics card, I have the problem all the time when I play FEAR, Battlefield 2 and BF2 Special Forces. I formatted my machine after I installed the new card, but that still didnt help at all.
Once when the PC crashed the screen got all scrambled up (which doesnt usually happen) and looped that screeching noise and I submitted an error report to microsoft and this is the response it gave me:
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=06da2a14-4ced-453f-bfe9-3f497b50edf3&SID=571
That was the only time it ever said that to me. Usually it just says theres a general hardware problem.
My normal temps are as follows:
idle: CPU 34C GPU 45 C
load: CPU 46C GPU 57C
If I had to guess as to what the problem is, I would say that its either an issue with my power supply or my RAM. I have a Vantec Stealth 470 watt PS, but from what I've heard its actually not all that good since the 12v rails are actually only like 11.98v. But, I really have no idea what the problem is at this point.
Any ideas?
*Edit* The system I'm talking about is the one in my sig.
