A few weeks ago I replaced my retail hsf with a volcano 9. When I was replacing it i slipped a few times and hit the mobo. I did this a few times the first time i put on my retail hsf. I checked and it doesnt appear that any traces were cut.

Now the annoying part is that when I try to play the UT2K4 demo theres a 50% chance that my computer restarts. This never happened before. I checked my voltages in BIOS and my ratings are all over the place but dont seem to be causing trouble during any other game.

Any ideas??:confused:
 
First and foremost, make sure you are using the latest and greatest video card drivers.

As far as your banging the MB, it would be *very* unlikely that a hardware problem of the kind you describe would be that intermittent. Failing 50% of the time with one particular game? Crashing to blue screen is indicative of Ring 0 software failures, hence the video card driver recommendation.

UT2K4 does use a lot of RAM, so you might try running memtest86 to make sure you don't have some bad memory.
 
How long does it take to restart, immediately at game start, or does it take a while? You might have a thermal issue.

BTW, how do you know your RAM is fine?

Wouldn't heat problems have reproducible results? 50 percent chance of restart sounds like memory or PSU.

Test the RAM, then the PSU.
 
Go grab memtest 86+ and run it for like... well as many days as possible and see what you get.

It could be heat, but an instant restart sounds unlikely because of heat. When exactly does it restart, at the flash screen, nvidia logo... menu?

It really sounds like a driver issue to me... because what your describing sounds exactly like what happens to display drivers. Might just try uninstalling them (make sure you clean em out too) and reinstall them again.

It doesnt seem to restart now but for some reason today just sitting here my temps are at 66 degrees at idle when the normal temp is around 45 degrees. The only thing that has changed from yesterday and today is last night I kicked my computer(not that hard:D) and now temps are through the roof......This is odd seeing as I just installed a Volcano 9 but for some reason according to speedfan my RPM on my hsf is running half of its top speed:confused:
 
Did you forget thermal paste??? Sounds like you need to reinsall that HSF............. :(
 
Yeah I used arctic silver 3. I went into BIOS and it said that its running at 37 degrees celcius... i think that speedfan is just fucked
 
Check your proc for wayward thermal coumpound, sounds like you may be shorting some bridges.

I'd guess this as you didn't have any problems before fitting this heatsink, also is it on tight & right? Have a check, may be master of the obvious material but hey i'm trying :D
