Announcement: Two NEW SMP2 Projects

You may have noticed that two new SMP2 projects have appeared on the project list. These are projects 6020 and 6021.

These projects are distributed through a new server, 171.64.65.54, hosted by Stanford University. This should help to ensure the SMP2 projects' availability and redundancy in case of breakdowns or download swarms.

The new projects include the following:
  • 6020: "Protein in POPC", 76900 atoms, preferable deadline of 3 days, final deadline of 6 days; 467 points and a bonus factor of 2.
  • 6021: "Protein in POPC, 77,050 atoms, preferable deadline of 3 days, final deadline of 6 days; 476 points and a bonus factor of 2.1.
As with SMP2 projects in the 60xx series, these can only be accessed with a version 6.29 SMP client with the -advmethods flag enabled.

I've already got one. But since I turned my computer off for the night, ppd's dropped to 7500.
 
It's close to 6012, from what I can see. My frame times aren't exactly the same, since this isn't a dedicated rig so I use my browser, watch videos, games, etc as well. But 6012 gives me 15068ppd with 3:16 times, and 6020 gives me 14100 with 3:24 times.

That seems very, very high to me because I can't exceed over 5000PPD, and that's without running other clients. With GPU clients running my SMP2 PPD is effectively halved to under 2500PPD. As you can imagine, I really don't like the new bonus system. Either that or something is horribly wrong with my systems...

What system specs are you running?
 
Yes. But I thought it didn't matter?

Project 6013, 6020 & 6021 currently do get a PPD boost with HT.
Project 6012 & 6014 currently do not get a PPD boost with HT.

A3 2.14 & 2.15 are not totally optimized for threading yet.
(2.15 even more then 2.14)

This is what is causing some WU to run slower then others.(Time Per Frame & PPD)

This was not discovered until a few days ago when new units were released.

The *extra* hyper threading cores help to solve the issue on certain work units.
(at the costs of higher power consumption & heat)

Stanford is very aware of this issue, because Tobit & I have been sending them HT information to help define and resolve the issue.

HT performance will change with future cores so keep that in mind when a new core is released.

At the moment, there is no real recommendation on to run HT or not. Up to the user until we can gather some more data.

Do you think in the future that HT will give a proper performance boost for all projects, or will it provide the same support as with no HT?
