Announced: CoD Modern Warfare 2

i keep seeing similar comments. I don't understand them. What is wrong with the engine they used for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty 5: World At War? I don't care for the fifth installment but I loved the fourth one. The gameplay was excellent and the game looked great while running well on a large variety of system configurations.

I was thinking the same exact thing. I thought I must be missing something, I think COD4 looks and plays great.

Will we be able to at least open doors now ?...

In all honesty, I'm getting tired of CoD games...the only one worth while was the original. The others just used a revamped engine and changed the setting, but the game itself stayed basically the same, with very limited freedom and no interactivity with the world. They either change that or CoD 6 will be exactly the same as all the other CoDs, but with the setting of CoD4...

And that happens because you can't do anything in the world. It's just a bunch of scripted events that lead you on an almost straight path. That's basically the gameplay of Doom with better graphics. IMO, this worked well when technology didn't allow for more. But nowadays, this concept is not enough. It made my CoD4 experience very boring. I liked the game overall, because some missions were at least entertaining, but others ranged from boring (the typical mission "one man vs a million rsspawning enemies", that repeats itself in every CoD game or shooters on rails) to extreme frustration, where I need to wait for the invulnerable NPC 11 that opens door 32...

That completely kills the immersion in the game for me...

Wow Dan, way to be mature. Nobody was being offensive or calling you out yet you have to be an ass hat and post the fucking failboat picture. Cool! Just because somebody doesnt agree with you, does not make them retarded.

I called him out on the comment because I thought it was bullshit and it was. Call of Duty 4 is not based on the Q3 engine. Period. Unless you can PROVE otherwise. I also called his argument into question as it was based on circumstantial and coincidental observations alone. At least that's how it read to me.

Now this I can understand. I too would like to see advancements in the game mechanics but I still enjoyed Call of Duty 4 quite a bit.

I loved CoD4. Being able to shoot thru cover, interacting with certain objects, rankings, etc. I'm hoping with CoD6 they stick to modern warfare. Going back to WWII was lame. Its played out.

I love CoD4, sure it's not all that interactive or anything but sometimes it's just fun to jump into a 64 player shipment FFA, that shit ridiculous. Most of the time I like Domination or something not team deathmatch.

But I hope they get rid of martyrdom, air strikes and helis. IMHO that kills the fucking game because it's entirely self perpetuating. For example, I'll get an air strike and using it I get enough kills for a helicopter and so on. AFAIK this hasn't changed since I haven't played since July.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

been waiting for this.... i just know it's gonna be good.. i've got 5 but i always end up putting 4 back in as the guns are too weird for me and the controls don't feel accurate. i hope they bring out another map pack for 4 to keep us going because i've rinsed all the levels to death already.

I don't mind the helicopters or the air strikes or even martyrdom. I don't care for them in certain levels but generally I think it is fine.

I disagree, I like the cinematic experience that the Call of Duty games offer. It's something that you can't get else where, it allows for some really intense and captivating moments. It's what first attracted me to the series, and I hope they stick with it. I love that the games feel like you're experiencing a movie or a story, the scripted event telling allows that. Having a wide open, fully interactable world would lessen that experience, and would take away from the storytelling. I see no reason why they need to change their formula to match the tech of other games. They should stick with the model that has made them successful and gives a unique experience.

Dan, you need to be careful with which words you choose. You were correct in your earlier comments, but not this one.

Basically what it comes down to is this:

The COD4 game engine is not the Quake 3 engine, but it most definitely was based on the Quake 3 engine. Over the course of 9 years, they've modified most everything and call it their own proprietary engine, but the proprietary engine wouldn't exist without the Quake 3 engine. The reason you see a lot of legacy items from the Quake 3 engine, is because it takes a lot more time to go in and comment out or remove things, than to just leave them there.

The COD4 engine is as much the Q3 engine, as the Doom3 engine is the Q3 engine. As in they are both based on the Q3 engine, but wildly different.

Disclaimer: I'm a software developer. If I didn't put enough detail to make sense of it to you, I'm sorry. But I believe I'm qualified enough to have an educated opinion on this.
