I think fragmentation on Android is hitting a head now, with the upcoming Gingerbread 2.3 release. Was reading some tech sites, and how Samsung still does NOT have Froyo 2.2 out on their Galaxy-S phones yet, and word today that most likely 2.3 will not be coming if at all to those phones next year.
And then someone made a good point, even the HTC or Motorola phones are lucky to get just one OS update to the phone you bought, very rarely will get 2 OS updates over the life of the phone. EVO 4G owners got the 2.2 Froyo pretty quick, but no one expects a 2.3 release anytime soon. Same with the Droids on Verizon, good luck seeing an official 2.3 Gingerbread on the Droid-X or Droid 2, and when if they do, will be after Honeycomb is the hot release and been out for awhile.
I am no Apple fanboy, last phone I had was the iPhone3G, and when I bought brand new 2 years ago, it was cool, didn't love it, didn't hate it. My current phone is the EVO 4G, a total bad ass awesomely fast phone, but the battery life is a fucking joke, so bad I need to ditch it ASAP, it is rated the worst smartphone compared to all other Androids and iPhones for 3G talk time, the EVO getting only 3.95 hours, the iPhone 4 gets 7.4 hours, and Droid-X like 7.95 hours.
My point is, I can kind of see Apple's view, on just releasing one cool phone just once per year. So if you buy a new iPhone, you know you have the best they offer until next year, and if there is a new OS update, you just download it for free, and every one gets it. Where with Android you can buy the best Droid today with 2.3, and not even 3 - 4 months later there will be an even faster phone out with 2.4 OS, and your old phone won't even get that update possibly.
blah blah blah...opinions ?
