And now for something different...

I have an old pc that I built for DOS gaming and today I was a little bored. It has a 766MHz Celeron along with an ATI Xpert 128 (16mb), and 768mb of ram, along with good old Win98SE. Here's what I ended up with:

Went from 766 to 958MHz. Super PI 1M dropped from 3m53s to 3m22s, and it definately feels a bit faster. I couldn't go any higher because the BIOS wouldn't allow. Anyone else have pics/data of overclocking older hardware?

Nicely done. :D
I used to OC my 1.2GHz Athlon to 1.4 in Win98 and thought that was some hot stuff.
These days, I only use old-school rigs for playing old-school games like Eye of the Beholder, X-Com, etc... Those games actually don't play too well on modern CPUs (I have some games that don't play at all on anything faster than 1GHz), so I deliberately keep them at stock speeds.

Those old Celys are kind of castrated. Maybe you can find a $10 EBay P3 so you can crank out those SuperPi digits faster! :D
I broke the 2 minute barrier, WooHOO!!!!

I've lost count of how many desktop computers I've gone through while my old Dell laptop keeps chugging along.
I wish the new ones were built as well as this old thing.

X-Com FTW! I'm playing System Shock 2, Diablo, and Settlers II right now. Who needs R600?

The Celerons are castrated, but the 566MHz and 600MHz were some of the best overclockers of their days (in fact most Celerons oc very well). But I just picked up a P3 800MHz off a forum member here. I love P3s, still my favorite CPUs. Plus, the Core 2 Duos owe a lot to them (well I suppose they owe a lot to the Pentium Pro as well).

PS: I have a Dell laptop with a Core Duo in it, and I haven't had any problems. Still, you're right about the build quality not being where it once was (but I suppose that's true for most things these days).

Pentium Pro is the best CPU Intel ever built in my opinion. :D

Without it, we wouldn't have the Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium M, Core Duo, Core 2 Duo, so I'm not going to disagree with you.

PS: Anyone have a Pentium Pro system for sale? lol

Not for sale, but I think I've still got one lying around to play with. Wonder if I can overclock it. o_o Maybe run it without a heatsink and see how long it lasts...or use it to test an unmarked TEC I've got.

After I'm done playing with it I might be willing to sell. ^_^ Either way if I get it to overclock I'll post pics.

BTW, what northbridge/southbridge is that?

Boo! Don't break it. That's history, rofl.:D

PS: Dibs. I call dibs on the mobo/cpu if it still works after you're done.

playing the original HL with all the lights off and sound up a bit was scary. those headcrabs coming out of the ceiling in some spots...holy shit..lol

i miss the P3 i had. coppermine slot 1 733. and before that i had a 500 slot A athlon. good old days lol i had an asus board for the P3...i could only get it up to around 800Mhz at the time.

What I'd like to see is a Celeron 300A @ 450 on a BX board. That's the platform that really kicked off "mainstream" overclocking, a setup like that should be put in a museum :p

Right, you're talking about the Celeron Mendocino. I'll have to pick one up sooner or later. Intel made it too good, and even canabalized PII sales.
