And now for something completely different (well, not really)...

OK guys and gals, after much deliberation and research, I've thinking the following configuration for a my new PC will be just what I need (main focus on gaming but also for some graphics work and such). So, what does everyone think? Will this get me through Doom3, Farcry, HL2, Painkiller with all their graphic goodness turned on?

I've decided to hold off on the new LGA775 chipset from Intel because the performance just isn't there yet and I think that platform just needs some time to mature. And I decided against AMD because I believe the hyper-threading in the Intel chip will be a benefit when I'm not gaming.

And I've already got a monitor, joystick and gamepad so that's why those items aren't in the list. I can get all this for a little over $2,500 - trying not to break the bank (mostly this will come from Newegg but I'm going to have to look elsewhere for my video card. I'll probably get it directly from eVGA).

o) Antec Performance Plus 1080AMG Case with an Antec 430W TruePower PSU
o) 2 Antec All-Clear Variable Speed 80mm SmartCool Plus Case Fan - Model 75013
o) COOLMAX Aluminum Filter for 80MM fan (for that intake fan on the side of the case)
o) Asus P4C800-E Deluxe i875P Chipset
o) Intel P4 3.2C Ghz Socket 478
o) CORSAIR XMS Xtreme Memory Speed Series, Xtra-Low Latency 184-Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200 w/ Platinum Heat Spreader, Model TWINX1024-3200XLPT – Retail – 2GBs
o) nVidia GeForce 6800GT (probably from eVGA)
o) Creative Labs SoundBlaster Audigy 2ZS
o) 2 Western Digital WD2000JB 200GB
o) Mitsumi D359M3
o) Windows XP Pro – OEM
o) Creative Inspire T7700
o) Plextor PX-712A
o) Sony Silver 16X DVD-ROM Drive – Model DDU1621
o) Logitech Blue Performance Optical Mouse PS2/ USB, Model "MX510"
o) Logitech Elite Keyboard USB/ PS/2 104keys – Model 967234-0403

Thanks,
Stephen

That looks pretty good and you should be able to play Doom 3 in fairly high detail.

Hey you might just want to go with the 3.0C Northwood. It will overclock easily to 3.2GHz and it will most likely overclock just as far as the 3.2C would; if your intentions are for overclocking. :)

By the way my system is very simular to the one you are building and you will love it!

Fairly similiar to mine, except I'm using a 3.0c @ 3.75. From what the benchmarks showed, Doom 3 should be no problem for that comp and it will run anything currently out beautifully. Just wait until you try FarCry at max settings!

look into liteon drives, they are cheaper and just as good as plextor drives.

2 gigs or RAM is unnecessary. You will rarely use a full gig.

I would suggest a bigger PSU, as 430 is the minimum reccomended for the 6800.

damn, didnt notice that. yea i agree, 2gb is really not needed, 1gb is plenty.

Thanks for the replies so far. I really appreciate all your thoughts on this --- And to touch on some of your comments:

I had seen a post on another forum about the 3.0c chip vs. the 3.4c and OCing. But I've never OCed my machines in the past and I wasn't planning on messing with OCing on this system any time soon. Although, that 3.0c chip is a lot less expensive. I'll have to think some more about this one.

That Sony drive is only $37 so that's not a big deal but I'll compare the liteon drives to the Plextor like you suggest and see how they compare.

The main reason I picked 2GB of RAM is because I want to get into 3D graphics rendering more (I didn't really state that at first) with tools like Bryce3D, Terragen, POVRay and I was thinking that the extra 1GB would help. But maybe not. Does anyone do any 3D rendering and knows if the extra memory would help?

I hadn't noticed that about the PSU and the graphics card. I might have to try riding that one out though since the PSU comes with the case. I hope that works out for the time being.

Thanks again all,
Stephen

If you want to run Doom 3 at 'Ultra' quality, 2 gigs would probably be nice. (From what was recently posted on the doom 3 hardware guide)

from my understanding.....

the "ultra" is somewhat reserved for the futre 512mb cards.

i have used bryce3d and terragen in the past and i dont think they ever even used the 512megs i have in my system now. if you can afford it comfortably, then go for it. but unless you are a hardcore graphical expert, i doubt you'll ever use it.

edit: can the 2 gigs and go for a pcpower and cooling 510 psu. if you feel that 1 gig of ram is holding you back, you can always upgrade later.
