I'm trying to get an old Dell Dimension 4100 back up and running. Everything is in order except for this one thing. It's missing what Dell calls a "3.5-Inch Front-Panel Insert." It's shown in the disassembly documentation here:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dzuul/rr.htm#3_5_inch_insert

I've googled and looked on ebay. I found one company in China that has it but it wasn't clear if they do single quantity retail sales to the US. I'm not really keen on ordering direct from China anyway.

My call to Dell Spare Parts didn't go well. I got transferred out without getting any kind of concrete answer about availability. I haven't been able to bring myself to call back yet.

Does anyone know of a place that sells these little Dell specific case items reasonably? I'd don't want to spend more than a few dollars. Entire 4100 systems are selling on ebay for $50.

These numbers are on the back of the insert that I have:

4101C

PADGTX
D1225

CAV 10

I can throw a pic up if it would be helpful.

+1 for putting something else in that bay. Get a memory card reader, or fan bus controller, or 2.5" hotswap bay, etc.

hey Kristof, I think I have an old Dimension 4200 with something similar, I don't know if it'll fit. Stopping by my parents' house tomorrow so I can check.
PM me if you're interested

I had thought of putting something else in there. It's hard to match turn-of-the-century Dell sh*tbox beige here in 2009.

This is the only 3.5" thing I could find on Newegg that isn't black or silver: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820270004

Too bad it's $50. Even if I find something that costs $15-20 by the time I've payed shipping I've spent 50% of the value of the machine.

I guess I could hit craigslist. I cringe at that thought. I think I'd try calling Dell again first.
