Just the fact that you've had E7's is awesome though. But since these are Ivy Bridge based, do you think they'd perform on par with expectations? Perhaps not worth the extra cost compared to the E5 4p's, but at least the performance is high?
Lol, I think I know what Grandpa is gonna get...
HeHe I believe these are supposed to go up to 8 CPU's per board for a total of 240 cores, While they may not preform as well as E5's just the thought of 240 cores/threads is definatley porn to a hardware nut like myself.![]()
Patriot, do the E7s work in the same socket as the SB E5s?
You have to get the 8xxx CPUs to do four way, and those will retail for $6K each. Shoulda been in IRC last night, someone had some of these 4xxx CPUs to play with.![]()

:blinks:
E7-88xx for 8 way
Ex-4xxx for 4 way
Ex-2xxx for 2 way (Intel should be shot for this even being an option)
Convention is the same for E5, E7, v1, v2 and v3
the E5-4890 v2 pair I have can do 4 way... I just only have 2 of them...

Also nice to have an option for people wanting to validate low then scale. But who sneezes at 24 cores in a dual machine with excellent performance? The cost is not all that much different from the equivalent competitors at this point ($2558) and intel is usually able to be discounted fairly well.
Not saying there are no in-class alternatives. Also not saying project that can afford, and need, the E7 would start with dual socket. But it's definitely nice to have the option.
E7 28xx chip, they don't discount them that much but you still spend 2-3k n the base board.
There will only be 4 and 8 way boards. If you buy a server they start at 13k vs 6.3k for an E5 i4p server base.
You would have the option to use just 2 chips with 4-way chips... but not limited to 2-way.
And the price difference is not terribly big to make that beneficial.
