I can't seem to find the right place to put this but..


I have a pair of 150W, 6 ohm, speakers that I'm powering off an old 80's reciever. I think I kinda blew out the left channel, 'cause I kept blowing fuses, and finally the left side is just really quiet. Soooo, I've decided that it's time to get a new reciever. Problem is:

I'm a n00b when it comes to stereo stuff, so I need to know a few things.

What specifications do I need to look for when getting a new reciever?

I'm not looking at spending a whole lot of money, so any suggestions?
 
well, I'm look at $150 max, under $100 if possible, for something that's worth while.
 
Are you sure that you need a new reciever and not a new left speaker? You could have blow the speaker by feeding it a clipped signal from the amp.
 
okay, so I swapped speakers, and the left channel on the other speaker is still quiet; which leads me to beleave that the left channel is fusked. So. It's time for a new reciever, one that I can just set the bare wires into, no plugging or anything.

Those are good prices. Especially that Surround one that is $150....it has 2 component video inputs (so you can at least use it for a couple years) and has binding post speaker terminals (as opposed to spring clips that some big brands have at this price point that suck). The remote looks descent too. Distortion levels are no worse than other recievers at this price point, and the wattage is more than enough (don't get pulled in by the hype).

I haven't bought anything from J&R in a long time, but my experiences were good back then. I still have a bunch of there catalogs from like 98-99 that just have all kinds of crazy cool stuff in it. Back then they seemed to sell alot of stuff that was like 2 years old for really good prices. Nothing was wrong with it and the stuff was great and still new, its just that big chain stores don't like to keep something on the shelf for more than 6 months so they get rid of it real cheap.
