Ok so I was wondering what kind of system I will need to be able to play the leetest of all games which of course will be coming out and one of them very shortly. Doom 3 and HL2 and I need a brand new cpu ect. I was wondering If yall could recommend me a decent gaming rig that will get me the max fps on these games I can get with my 9800XT

First off I need a computer that can be upgradable in the future, for instance how intel has the new socket 775 out, should I get one of those or will they continue making their 478 processors for a long way to come?

Also if intel is better for gaming (which I hear it isnt, I hear its better for software and amd is better for gaming) do the 478 boards support pci xpress and ddr2 ect. ( which im sure they do)

The same goes for amd which cpu and mobo should I get? I haven't been following the cpu world lately, so I figured I would ask the hardcore peoples of the cpu world on teh [H]

Socket 478 is looking to be offed in the future - Intel has recently made the jump to LGA775. While not an amazing socket jump (cause the LGA775 has some problems like easily bent pins), it's probably the one Intel will stay with until they develop this rumored unified socket for Xeon and future Pentium chips.

There are no socket 478 mobos with DDR2 or PCI-Express support, but some Taiwan mobo companies might release socket 478 mobos that use the i915 and i925 chipsets, but don't take my word for it.

Honestly, lately, Athlon 64s have pretty much been owning the consumer CPU market. Athlon 64s perform well in games and can perform at or around the same level as Intel chips in other applications. Intel chips still hold an edge in encoding though.

If you're looking for an upgrade now, and are willing to switch mobos and processors, then I'd go for a socket 939 Athlon 64 (socket 939 is the future for AMD chips right now). However, you already have a pretty powerful processor all ready, the 2.6C. It would be sufficient for games now, and can tide you over until processor price drops and faster chips.
 
you would be better off selling that 9800xt while it's still worth something and getting a 6800 or 6800gt

as far as cpu and chipset, I would go with an amd socket 939 setup, it's better for gaming and more 'future proof'
