I have a Hitachi Harddrive that has been sitting outside of my PC for a little over six months now. I went to install it back into my PC a few days ago and noticed the heads were literally slamming into the side of the case. I know it's a tell-tale sign that the drive is toast but I really need to get some data off of there. Most importantly files that I've been storing and moving around from drive to drive since like 1995. I know I should have had backups but being a computer geek and all I always figured a dead drive could never happen to me.

My question therein lies, how can I recover my data? I tried the freezer trick, no dice.

Are there companies out there that specialize in recovery?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

DriverSavers, Ontrack Data Recovery Systems, etc. There are tons of companies that specialize in data recovery, and they all charge very high premiums to get the job done. Some charge flat rates, some charge per amount recovered, etc. No matter how you look at it, if you've got a mechanically defective drive (meaning it won't power up, initialize, the OS or the BIOS can't access it, etc), you'd be looking at well into the $500+ range (US dollars) or more for any data recovery operations whatsoever.

So it becomes a cost to need ratio: is the data on that old drive worth the cost, and if so, how much?

Where you go from there is up to you...

Yes any data recovery service is going to charge an arm and a leg for getting data off of a mechanically defective drive.

Thanks bbz_Ghost and Uberbob102000 I'll start saving up my money then I guess. As sad as it is, I actually did have data on there worth paying that much to recover [yet I was too stupid to back it up].
