Amplifier

i am guessing that you're referring to headphone amplifiers? headphone amplifiers help drive headphone and often improve the sound quality.
as far as the difficulty in making them it depends on your own skill level. you can also ask someone to build one for you.

It's just a cleaner amplifier than what is on most receivers, and is also good for driving higher end headphones, which often tend to be harder to drive cleanly than say, a $20 pair of sonys.

Also if your sound card has line level out, the amplification of a high end headphone amp is far, far cleaner than any PC speaker set, and a good amount of receivers out there.

And to answer your original question, they are ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED to drive any Hi-Fi headphone anywhere near its potentional. Power and Quality that can not be obtained by just a crappy receiver's headphone outputl :D
 
ok, so they are integrated amps, and they are usually in the $1000+ range...

I was jsut trying to avoid that "well my I have more moeny than rockefeller in my wallet alone mega hyper supersonic ultrabombastic hifi component_01, and it has an incredible hadphone out" :p

If you can find an old Marantz or Fisher reciever or intergrated amp, they'll do well. Way back when, a lot of makers used to use a resistor to drop the power of the main amp for the phone jack. Now sadly, most use really cheap op-amps.

They are not integrated at all, they are stand alone amps that should be connected to a line out. They can be built for as little as $30 for a CMOY (DIY), but yes, some do exist in the 2k range. A decent amp will run you $75-200 depending on the design and components.
 
If you have some cash, start small with a cmoy or other portable custom build amp in the sub $100 range. Once you start to get the feel of amped sound, you'll probably have a better idea of how good an amp you'll be willing to buy in the future. Hey, you might even be content with a pocket amp. 40 hours rechargable battery on mine =).
 
Will this help if I want to hook up my mp3 player to my car stereo through the back ports? I have a line out port on my mp3 player but I only have a cable that connects to my headphones. I hear some sound of the music but it's faint and just dosn't work. Does this work on such things or does anyone know how I can set something like this up in my car?

the post went over your head man... I wasn't talking headphone amps...I was talking headphone outs on receivers/integrated amps. Headphone amps are NOT integrated amps.

amplifier = duh
pre-amp = volume knob and source selection for amplifier
integrated amp = pre-amp and amplifier in one chassis
receiver = integrated amp with built in tuner (am/fm variety usually)

BTW headphone amps could technically be considered integrated amps, since they do have a volume knob, but are kept out of that category since they lack source switching.
 
Well lets see if we can figure this out.... if there aint no switches on the front where else could they be?

Would a headphone amplifier increase the quality and sound of the bass on the headphones? Thats probably one of the only reasons i'd actually buy one.
 
Yes even a simple amp like a cmoy would increase lower frequency response, you can even tweak the capacitors and resistors if you'd like the poll to be closer towards the lower frequencies. This also depends on what headphones you have too, they each have their limits.
 
generally, you DO have an improvement in sound quality but in what form it comes depends mainly on the components used internally. interconnects also play a roll.

Think about an amp this way:

It makes your sound louder. So why buy a headphone amp if it's already loud enough? Well, your source either has a line-out (unamped) in which case it's necessary to buy an amp. Or, your source has a crappy integrated amplifier that does not do its job right. It will NOT increase your bass, it will only properly represent what your source is outputting.
