While browsing audio gear I came across Sony's SA-W2500, a desk size amplified subwoofer. Looking a the back of it, you can see where your speakers can be connected. Does this mean that the sub would serve as an amp to passive speakers, or would I still need a separate amp to use bookshelf speakers with my PC? Looks to me like this would get the job done.

That's an old school hookup - it's a passthrough for amplified speakers. You'd take the L/R speaker outs from your amp and pass them through the sub to get bass (notice the in and out sides). It's made for stereo amps without bass management or a sub output.

In other words no, you still need a separate amp.
