i got an old ammo case for free, and was thinking of modding it. it seems big enough to fit an atx mobo, and maybe a small psu. its the kind of case that the inside has a handle on it and slides out one end, and a doorr in it opens to reveal the inside. ill try to post pics later.

would it be worth it to mod?

Nope.

in order to cut the metal you would need very very powerful saws fire etc.

it'd take you like 3 discs to go 1/2" heh. you could do it if you had a plasma cutter, oxy/acetelyne torch, etc...dunno if this one would be worth it..would be cool though

You could just have all the ports running out of the open end, no need to cut. I've been seeing a rash of posts lately with a lot of discuragement to people for cool mods. This is [H]ardForum, not [E]asyForum. The effort is worth it if you want something unique.

crap that is awesome  i wish my ammo box was as good as that :(
yeah, that is sickeningly good, I'm sure someone told him it wasn't worth it either though, I say give it a try.

I'd say mod everything to come out of the open end. If you want to try to cut the ammo case itself, go for it. It's your mod and all.

I think that link shows a 50-cal ammo box. If you have a different ammo box, say 5.56, then the dimensions will differ slightly. Either way, you have something that could potentially become a really cool PC. Check out this site for some step-by-step instructions on building your own ammo box PC: http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/ammobox/. They have links to a whole bunch of other tiny PCs to draw some ideas from. Good luck!

I dunno if they have more than just one size box for a particular ammo, but the one's we use in my national guard unit are much bigger than that for 50cal. All the same you can go to any army/navy surplus store and buy a case in different sizes I would imagine. I've always wanted to make a mini-itx as a portable server.

my uncle is in the airforce and he gave me about 5 ammo boxes. we have a pretty big one its about 2 feet by 8 inches by 1/12 feet.

there also another one thats a little smaller and theres one its about 1 by 6 by 1

eh, I think we're just saying that if he can't get access to the tools necessary to cut it, then it would be damn near impossible. and with regard to running everything out the open end...that sounds like the [E]asy thing to me :)

I understand, I'm just saying adapt and overcome, if you can't cut then renegotiate it. Even with a perfect cutting job, I think it would look better running out the end than sticking out the side or bottom where it would be better to be sitting on. Seems like a better design choise as opose to just being easy. Once apon a time these prebuilt CompUSA mods didn't exist and people worked hard to make the finished product that they wanted. I'm just saying he shouldn't give up just cause yall asume he doesn't doesn't have the ambition for the project. I appologise if I sound naggy.

Just do what WC'ers do to copper blocks when they don't have a mill - drill several holes. In this case, you can file down the remaining 'teeth' in the opening if you want to make a rectangle. Not *everything* has to be done with a dremil...

My suggestion would be to route the cables through one hole in the back, and have the moboard on a removable 'sled' - no need for a big rectangular cutout in the back/side then. I'd also make it's laying on the side so the lid flips up - slimline atx :D Another thing, most hole saws can cut though steel...you people have gotten soft working with aluminum for so long (pun intended) :p

ok guys thanks for the advice ill probably mod it. ill post pics later, but i dont think ill be starting the mod soon, though.

ok, here is the link to the pics:

ammo box

too lazy to put on the forums :p

the only problems are the horrible paint job, (all scratched up) and only half the latches work like they should.

A little bit of google magic tells me that that is not an ammo box but a radio parts box of some sort.

Just a FYI, Zapwizards ammo rig box is a polymer ammo box...much easier to work with...If you want to caht with him he's usually over in the AMD Processor forum...

I too have an AMMO can, its from the..20mm linked HE round can, it's the same size as an ATX tower though...and it is wicket tough to work with...I'd recommend polymer ammo cans, way easier to work with.

Man, I can SOOOOO see an LCD mod in that box. Replace the flip up lid with an LCD, or mount it inside the lid, so when you pull out the inside box, you flip up the lid and there's the LCD. Cover the "PC" in the box with some smoked plexi or something. That would rule.

And BTW, whatever that box is/isn't, it's BEGGING for a PC mod....

Yeah. Do you have a CAD program? That would let you put some ideas down, so you could brainstorm them... Otherwise, still brainstorm ideas, but by drawing some sketches... And, I can see that case with a nice LCD mod as well, and plus, the case looks hefty roomy... Good luck, and I'll be paying close attention to this, as it deserves it, as it is an excellent idea...

no i dont have one :( oh well, i guess ill use paint or something, unless u guys know of a site i can download one for free
