amd64 x2 3800 - but which core?

The only one of those that's an X2 is the Manchester. The Venice and Newcastle are both single core chips.

d'oh.

that's crazy since they are similar in price. how come the single cores cost as much as the dual core?

They're similar in price because they're all rated at 3800+. The dual core is definlty the one to get out of those though.

ok, here's te real question, Manchester or Toledo on the X2 3800 level?

Toledo are only the higher cache X2s. FX-60, 4800+, and the 4400+.

The 3800+ can be a Toledo it will just have half the l2 disabled.

i heard 165s were better overclockers but people have been saying that the 3800+s are better now. I want to get around 2.6, which one should i get?

X2-3800. See sig...

The Opteron 165 only has a 9x multiplier (a bit harder to reach 2.6 - 2.7 or so) and the extra cache is not worth it IMHO.

I'm still sticking to the X2-3800, especially if you can get a 06/?? stepping. Most are hitting 2.8ghz+ on air. Also, the 3800 is cheaper, not by much though.

Hmm, thats great news, I guess I'll order one of those and hope I can get it to overclock to/or past 2.4Ghz. (Should be easy right?)

maybe its becasue it's midnight where I am but I just found that last comment to be hilarious

how the hell do you identify the core then cause, cpu-z says my core is a damned toledo and i have a 3800 x2

cpuz also says my x2 3800+ is a Toledo core.

Code Name Toledo Brand ID 5
Family F Model 3 Stepping 2
Ext. Family F Ext. Model 23 Revision JH-E6

so I guess we're back to square one, asid form price, is there any major difference between a Toledo and Manchester 3800, or is AMD just trying to sell all it can by selling half cached Toledo's?

Cpu-z says my current 3500+ is a Manchester, but that disabled core isn't really helping me now is it?

CPU-Z reports my core as a Manchester.

Brand ID 5
Family F Model 3 Stepping 2
Ext family F Ext model 23 Revision JH-E6

Software bug?

Why would it be a bug? There are Toledo and Manchester 3800+'s out there so you just got a Manchester.

I'm not sure what to make of it, but there are definitely 2 SKUs for all but the 4800+
