AMD64 retail HS + thermal pad

When I rebooted my machine after some gaming sessions, the POST screen was registering the cpu at between 39 and 42c. This seemed high to me, so I went out and bought a little thing of thermal compound. I wasn't sure if the stock HS had shipped with a thermal pad or something on it either, so I wanted to apply this to be sure. I unhooked the HS and fan, and with a little twisting, the HS pulled off. On the back of the proc and the bottom of the HS were the remains of what it looks like when you pull a sticker off a wall or something. I guess it shipped with a thermal pad :/ Anyway, is this an issue? I put it right back together, and I'm still getting the same temps and everything seems to be working alright, but load temps in the low 40's still seems high... Should I find some way to scrap that off and put on the compound, or am I ok as it is? Nothing has been OC'd yet, but I am running a 3000+ Winchester at stock speeds, and based on my experience around here, it seems to be a travesty to not have an overclocked AMD64 :D

When you first installed the heatsink and cpu.. did you peel off the sticker off the heatsink?

Load temps in low 40's is fine... Dont read temps from the bios, its not at idle and its not at load.

Those temps seem about right.. You have a Newcaslte or Winchester?

My cpu Idles 48-49c =X

Really? Ive been getting temps from my Bios and its been telling me its 48-49c What do you use MBM?

Sticker on the bottom of the heatsink... :(

God I feel like a n00b.

Um you mean you left the thermal pad on there and applied compound also? What kind of compound did you use? You, for sure, only need to use one. Adding both will probaly do more harm then good. I would do a quick lapping of your heatsink (unless you know its perfectly flat 100%) and use some thermal compound. Use Artic silver if you have it, if not its worth the 9$ at Compusa....(note: Compusa sells Artic Silver under the Mad Dog Multimedia name, it will come in a MDM package, but will say Artic Silver on the tube itself). That should shave a few degrees off. Make sure to follow the instructions very carefully when using AS.

Omg.. you should be happy that your cpu didnt fry..

THE BEST ADVICE to you right now is.. clean off everything off the heatsink and the IHS with iso alcohol.. and apply the thermal compound that you bought.. but if you can spend another 5 bucks.. u should get AS5.. best choice. I still can't believe your cpu was running between 39-42c with the sticker still on the stock HS rofl...lucky man.. lucky.

No, I didn't do that. I'm not that stupid :p. What's the IHS and where can I get ISO Alcohol? And, assuming I can get the stuff, how do I clean it off the back of the proc? How delicate is that part of it?

Low 40's sounds high. But not at all dangerous.

How is low 40's high? Anything on Air low 40's is actually "decent" temps.

the IHS is the heat spreader on the back of the cpu chip. Iso is short for isopropyl.. you can get isopropyl alcohol from your local duane reade/cvs or any pharmacys. Use q-tips to clean the heatsink and IHS.

I got a 3500+ winnie @ 2.4ghz on the stock cooler w/ Arctic Silver 5 at 44c load 1.45v, so your temps are fine imo. I'd dish out more cash for a better heatsink but I'm hitting a motherboard cap at 240fsb on this A8V deluxe.. that or my pc4000 ram doesn't want to run its rated 250fsb.

wow, I don't want to be a dick but that is kinda dumb. wouldn't the sticker melt though? But yeah, as others have said, clean if off and apply the AS5, but do it this way, just place a small amount (about the size of a piece of rice, maybe little smaller in the center and place the heatsink over it flat, lock'er down and you'll be set. there's a certain "burn in" time before you'll actually see a difference in temps using the method I just discribed, but there will be a difference.

Well when i had to remove the thermal pad I used a Plastic scraper and used alittle ISO to loosen the pad. Then I took some sand paper, started off on 800 grit, worked all the way up to 1500 grit and then polished it off with some alittle brillo pad. Removed all the pad, and made my heatsink perfectly flat. The key to doing a good job is using a piece of glass or something you know if 100% flat, wrap the paper around it and just slide the heatsink on top of it in a circle type motion.

Dude as far as I know your temps are completely normal. That is almost exactly where I am at. 37-42 idle and about 52-57 under load. Dont sweat it you are fine. Its an AMD not an INTEL. =D

heres what i did, got it, scraped the pad off, cleaned w/ 91% isopropyl, put on some arctic silver ceramique, put the HS on and locked it in, im at 2.4GHz w/ an idle temp of 39-41 and a load temp of around 49 sometimes 50, but at stock speeds its idle at like 34. From what i've heard arctic silver is better than the stock pad so i'd use that.
hope i helped

You can buy like 70% isopropyl alcohol from Wal-Mart or anywhere really. It's just rubbing alcohol. Stronger ones like 90%+ you can get from a drug store.

its better to get 99% isopropyl alchohol. ive heard overheating problems with people that cleaned their heatsink/IHS with 70% isopropyl alchohol. The thing is that 70% isopropyl alchohol evaporates slower than 99%, therefore leaving small residue behind on the IHS and heatsink. Its best to use the purest isopropyl alchohol you can find.

Wow thanks guys! This info really helped! I was going to create a thread but all the answers I need/ed are right here.

Just a Q, kinda off topic. So I hear that if you use a different thermal compound other than the one supplied on the heatsink, AMD will void your warranty. What I want to know is, how can AMD find out if you used a different type of thermal compound?

Hmm i dont know where you heard that but i can say that i have done about 5 RMA's to AMD and never once have they asked me what TC i was using....When I ship chip back to them, i always cleaned every trace of TC on my CPU.

Nah, I don't see how this is possible. 70% alcohol should evaporate quickly enough, combined with the wiping action. How could alcohol residue affect your temperatures? All you want is for something to fill in the microscopic pockets between the CPU and the heatsink. Hell, there are articles that prove toothpaste is better than Arctic Silver.

91% is really good, and not much more expensive. Go for the good stuff if you're trying to remove thermal compound.

This rumor is totally false. Nothing in the AMD documentation says this. I just RMA'd a processor and they didn't ask about thermal compound. I didn't even clean it compleltely when I sent it back to them. I got my replacement processor on Friday.

I just got my 3500+ Winchester (retail box). They have a large plastice tray on the bottom of the CPU to protect the thermal pad, there's no sticker on top of the thermal material.
