which should i choose? buildig machine for friend, no overclocking. Want fastest performance... Can you suggest mobo too, something that has integrated graphics/sound/lan and ram wise... would it be more economic to get the p4 or a64? right now.. estimated for p4 is ram 3200 Geil.

Why does he want this comp? Gaming? It doesn't really sound like it. It's easier to make a decision when you know what the comp will be used for.

If you say anything like "Browsing the internet/Emailing/Solitaire," I'm gonna call him crazy.

ya, if its not enything extreemly stressful go with a ath. xp barton 2500+, a asus k7n8x, and your golden.

if it is stressful go with the 64 and a asus k8v delux

If you want a recommendation then your going to have to tell us pretty much exactly the top things he will be doing on the system. Otherwise people that tell you which is the best is just stateing an opinion that doesn't really mean anything and is only accurate if you use the system for the same things they do.

If your building him a gaming rig then i would go with the A64 especially since your not overclocking.

If you were building an overclocking rig the Pentium 4 hands down no competition.

If he primarily into applications, video encodeing, image rendering, multitasking, heavy data crunching and what not then the Pentium 4.

Ither system will perform more then good enough. He'll never know the difference with whichever processor you pick because they will both perform well overall. Its just a matter of specialties in certain areas.

Its not like the Pentium 4 3.0 isn't a great gaming processor and its not like the A64 can't run applications well. You just pick for your specialty so you can shave off a few seconds in the application or gain a couple more frames per second in a game.

sorry. he just wants it for desktop apps only... he wants the 'fastest' experience money can buy... (reasonable) reason i asked was because i heard hyper threading was really good for multitasking in windows... but mostly office apps and mail.. i know it excess speed.. but im just building it.. can you suggest ram at all along with cpu suggestions? thanks in advance

If gaming isn't his primary reason for the desktop then i would go with the Pentium 4 3.0c. They are better overall processors then the A64.

For RAM i would get Mushkin, Kingston, or Corsair PC3200. Mushkin 1GB PC3200 lvl 1 would be a good buy for around $213 on newegg.

Hyperthreading will help out quite a bit for multitasking and anything that is multi threaded for dual processors.

why not just get that $500 dell that you see everywhere? He doesn't need more than a P3 500 to run office and IE descently.

He may be running heavier applications than just office apps. I wouldn't want to run Photoshop and 3ds max on a p3 500 myself :). If he's got the money let him spend it. Our friend here may be getting paid to build it and he most likely wont be any longer if he talks the guy into a dell lol.

I would get 1GB of Crucial PC3200 with the system. Good, stable ram, but it just doesn't overclock well. Also, if he wants pure speed, get two 36GB raptors for RAID0.

I agree with Crucial RAM, but he certain doesn't need RAID 0 for desktop apps. And if all he's using it for is desktop apps, it's questionable as to wether or not he needs even one Raptor.

Since the guy is not overclocking, Crucial memory may not be a bad idea but i wouldn't suggest he needs the Raptors. Raptors are meant for high end workstations but enthusiasts have adopted them also. They aren't a desktop hard drive. Or at least that wasn't what their purpose was meant for.

This guy will need storage and 2 36GB raptors wont give it. Buy him one large 160GB+ hard drive from Seagate or Western Digital.
